Lumbar Puncture & IV Fluids

I got referred to local hospital to see a Dr with an "interest" in MS while I am waiting to see neuro as there is a backlog in my area. Saw him Monday and he called Wednesday pm to see if I would come in on Thursday for an LP and then possible IV steroids.

Turned up thurs a.m expecting to be in for a couple of hours and be back to pick my daughter from school at 3pm. Hubby on holiday this week so he was with me. Soon realised I was expected to stay overnight!

Got loads of blood taken then had to wait for clotting time results and the others were sent off elsewhere. Got taken through for LP and it was fine apart one split second when I got a sharp pain on my groin area, I was then told to lie on my back and I was hooked up an IV containing sodium chloride (I think). This was to last for about six hours, tooks about 8 in the end. I have never heard of this happening, it wasn't as a result of what happened during the LP as they said before it I would get this, has anyone else had the IV fluids? Certainly I haven't had any sign of a headache.

This morning I was given IV steroids for an hour then released and I go back sat and sun for the rest.

Hi Alixjo, I'm thinking that iv fluids aren't given very often as part of the LP.  The CSF that is taken is really a minute amount and replaced by our systems in just a few hours, I believe.

New studies are suggesting that being on your back after an LP isn't necessary either.  If you are going to have a leak, it is going to happen whether you are down or up.

The whole LP discussion intrigues me because everyone's procedure and post-procedure experiences seem to vary widely.

hopefully the iv steroids will help to quiet your symptoms.

my best,
Lulu

Thanks for the reply Alex.
I did have two shots of local anaesthetic, felt a scratch on the first that was all. I'll take it easy for a few days (any excuse) just in case.

I had fluids but I also had anesthesia for mine. I still got the headache so take care of yourself for the next few days.
