My rant .... Neurologists!!!

That disgust doesn't apply to all of them, but two particular ones over in Western PA.  DJ (shadowsister) was just *dismissed* by the neurologist at the MS clinic at Allegheny Hospital.

Why?  Because the MRI imaging lab reported that she had cancelled her MRI testing.  This couldn't be further from the truth .... she went for the MRI, and was unable to hold her head still due to the tremors.  They were unable to complete the MRI.  So the lab had it wrong in their report to the neuro.

But even if that could be explained, how do you excuse a supposedly knowledgeable doctor basing her future treatment on his need to see MRI images?   Does even the head of this clinic have his head where the sun doesn't shine?

The problem compounds itself because the MSologist reported this dismissal to the local neuro, who has also now said there is nothing he can offer her in the way of treatment because they are not sure that she even has MS.

Now you can join me in exclaiming WTF!!!

DJ has a dislike of neuros, and I thought we had made progress with them since her move to Pennsylvania.  Unfortunately she is now back in the exclusive care of her PCP, the urologist and the pain management doctor.  As she said to me on Friday, now we know why she doesn't trust neurologists.

Disgusted, dismayed and distressed ranks at the top of my list right now.

WTF is right.  Any neurologist who is not afraid of their own shadow and not afraid to use their brain could help DJ.

The MS neuro will not investigate MS as a possibility and the local neuro won't see her now?  Good grief.  I can barely hold my dialing finger back and make a call.  My middle fingers are being held down too.

I experienced something similar to this when I first began having muscle weakness and pain.  The doctor was an osteopath who I had seen many times and had paid lot's of $$ over the span of a year and a half.

When I developed double vision, she ordered an MRI without contrast.  The night before the MRI was scheduled I had to go to the ER.  I felt awful and spent hours there.  Had a spinal and CT of the brain.

The next morning when my MRI was scheduled, I called to cancel BUT the doctor gave me old info on the facility to do the MRI - no telephone number and gave me the wrong address.  I could not contact them to cancel.

When I called this doctor, she dumped me right then and there and refused to see me. I said baloney and insisted she see me that day.  Her receptionist told the doctor was going home sick.  I had my husband drive me to her office and made a little scene in the waiting room.  They took me back immediately.  I asked her what the big idea was to dump me under the circumstances.  After much debate she confessed that it would be better that I go out of town to obtain proper medical treatment. WTF?  Why didn't she just say that in the first place?

The behavior of my doctor was unforgivable, COWARDLY, and ignorant.

The actions of DJ's neurologist is the same, with an emphasis on cowardly.  He shut her down and went the extra mile to block treatment with the local neuro.   How about they put their heads together and figure out how to get DJ her MRI?

BTW it was a good internist who also said baloney to my experience and paved the way for me to get the appropriate doctor and care.  He takes CARE of his patients and doesn't run scared at any obstacle.  That is what DJ needs.  Is there a well-connected mature physician in town?  Some of the young PCP's are wimps.

I'd be more than happy to take these neuro's to task and try to get her in to see the local neurologist.

DJ has some care form her other doctors, but her case is screaming for a neurologists insight.  What's with these neuro's who have nothing to offer without worshipping the MRI?  They CAN offer insight and care in the absence of one.  That is, if they only had a brain. #@**#@@*^@#

Hi, you don't know me, but I am so ANGRY and FRUSTRATED on your behalf right now I could kick something. Isn't it funny how merely reading a few words on a screen can raise your bloodpressure in no time at all?

ARGGHHHH!!!

Mostly I just want you to know I FEEL for you-- I've only been making the doctor rounds for a few measley months and I've been appalled by how much it takes out of a person, especially considering it's when they are at their most vulnerable-- our nervous systems are going haywire, for Pete's sake, and we're having to STRATEGIZE.

Best,
Sadie

All,
After reading your comments I felt compelled to  call DJ and share your words with her - unfortunately her computer is giving her the *blue screen of death* and will not allow her to get on here.  She's hoping that her family will pool resources and buy her an inexpensive computer for Christmas.

DJ asked that I tell all of you how much your words mean to her  - she said 15 minutes earlier she was feeling very alone but hearing all of your  thoughts made her realize how many people here care for her and miss her presence.

She is going to a new PCP on Dec. 8 - this is her daughter's GP - and she is hopeful that they will connect and he will do whatever is possible to help manage her symptoms.  She said the PCP she is seeing now is nice enough, but has done nothing for her - and I quote DJ - "Nice enough – but I don’t want patted on the head…..I want a doctor to take care of my symptoms."

One of the biggest disappointments for her was the Ms neuro had actually talked to her about trying copaxone with her to see if it would help - she was looking forward to trying something new to her that may have made a difference.  now she knows that is no longer an option.

She did call the MS neuro but only got as far as the receptionist in telling them that the MRI place had it wrong in their report.  They told her they could only go by what was in the report.  So much for accuracy of records.

Your words made her laugh and cry - seriously she did both.  She loves the image of us taking out the neuros, but she's a good Italian woman and a simple knee-capping mafioso style would be enough! LOL

She asked that I send hugs on the wind to all of you and know that she loves each and every one of you. She says your prayers and well wishes are felt and help to carry her through.

Hugs from me, too!
Lulu

Wow...the anger is jumping off the posts and I hope hitting those neuros right where it hurts...straight between their legs.  I have to laugh that Pastor Dan is joining the girl's protest witht he offer of the ammo!.

Seriously,my heart goes out to DJ and I join with everyone in just continually sending her love and support. Ranting and raving on her behalf is not going to change anything, but it has certainly pushed a lot of buttons in people and sometimes it is helpful for us all to think about what it is that has made us see red (and not our Red on the forum!).  The obvious horrendous treatment that DJ has received and the injustice is just shocking...but the underlying thing is this wretched condition affects us all and when we see a fellow sufferer (particulalry one who has been so brave) treated so barbarically, we feel her pain too.

Love Sarah x

An hour north of Columbus, and all I can bring is a .40 S&W M&P, but I have several boxes of ammo.  (Red, we might have to wait until after THE GAME, ya think?  For DJ's sake, let's try to be back by then instead.)

Doubt if they profile Dodge Caravans.

MS, as a disease, is bad enough to deal with, however; having MS means you have to fight for everything!!!!  Due to my disability having been discontinued because personnel in Dr.'s offices aren't doing their jobs for their patients, and because Dr.'s aren't making notes about all of the symptoms we discuss with them, etc.; maybe we would benefit from taking a list of our symptoms to discuss with the Dr. and have them sign the list, make a copy of the signed list to give us and they put the original in our medical file. Also, in situations such as DJ's we can take a form that shows we showed up for the procedure and there is a signature and comment by the personnel stating we couldn't have it done.

I have found out that WE have to TAKE CONTROL of every aspect of our disease and medical care.  We have to babysit the educated.  I know there are alot of great Dr.'s out there but sometimes, I don't think they realize the consequences of their actions, or the lack thereof.  It's highly frustrating.  My hat's off to all the good Dr.'s though!

A delayed response to Lulu's initial message is overpowering my initial calm, controlled response to Shadowsister's dastardly intolerable dilemma:

WTF!!!!!   Tell that head neuo at the Allegheny Hospital MS clinic as well as Shadowsister's local neuro to both take a long walk off a short pier!!!!

And Shadowsister, I have a panda you need to take with you to your next neuro visit.  His name is Smudge and you can see him in action if you go to "Never Say No To Panda" on You Tube.  Just imagine that panda having a go at the head dork at the Allegheny Hospital MS clinic!  It does a downtrodden, violated MS patient good just to imagine it!!

Hugs to you, Shadowsister, much sympathy, and wishes for better medical experiences in the near future.  And thanks, Lulu, for bringing this travesty to our attention!

He or She was the WRONG neurologist for DJ, good riddens I say!!!

I can't imagine this neuro not ever saying something STUPID or doing something STUPID to her if she was under their care, she is better off with out that kind of doctor in her team.

There is too much wrong with what has happened, it makes no sense with her extensive medical history, that any doctor would not be looking after a (seriously ill) patient because she doesn't have 'his' MRI.  Maybe slightly and i do mean slightly understandable if there was no historical evidence what so ever but a patient like DJ who does have extensive evidence collected by learnered collegues, over a number of years is just totally illogical!

If nothing else this neurologist had the perfect learning opportunity in treating a PPMS patient who has complicating sx, they dont come around everyday, stupid and dumb to let that kind of added value experience go. As an optimist, I will say that it was better this way, as aggrivating as this is and I am steaming buckets. I feel its better to have a neurologist run prior to treating than one who doesn't have a clue what to do and is too 'up them selves' to admit they are out of their depth and end up damaging the patient.

DJ you are better off with out that type of neurologist, good riddence to dead wood!!!!!

Now what? Making a complaint seems more than appropriate, letting all her doctors past and present know the situation adds a sting to the complaint but what if anything can be done about getting DJ a suitable neurologist?

HUGS.............JJ

Oh no, this is the last thing DJ needs to be dealing with.

This is exactly what I brought up the other day in my post about neuros joining hands in this ridiculous idea that too many people are being diagnosed with MS so they have to start dismissing the ones they think won't fight back.  DJ has MS - PERIOD and who ever questioned it should be brought up before the medical board and flogged.

If this is really a trend, then we all have to fight back because people like DJ should NEVER be dismissed by any neuro whatever the situation especially from something as stupid and trivial and especially WRONG as was put on a MRI report.  Since when has an MRI report - saying she didn't show up - become a legitimate reason for dismissing a patient from appropriate care for his/her condition.

Hey, if you guys are planning a road trip up there "talk" to a few of her doctor's, cound me in. There is strength in numbers.

Sending many hugs and understanding for you DJ.  Thanks Lu for sharing this with us.

I don't understand the outrage and surprise about this:  When it comes to neuros, even so-called specialists, as well as many other MDs in this country, I have found that this is not particularly suprising or atypical behavior.

A military term, "SNAFU", describes the situation pretty well:  Situation Normal, All F-d Up!

I still haven't paid my cardiologist's $75 charge for my alleged "no-show" which was incurred when I reported, on time I might add, for my stress test which they then refused to do because of my very high blood pressure and stroke-like symptoms.

My sympathy and condolences to Shadow Sister for her needless suffering caused by the misreporting of the MRI lab.  Is there any way, she could inform her "neuro expert" of the lab's miscommunication?

You know, it seems like with all the litigation against doctors, especially the needless frivolous profit-motivated type of litigation over the past few decades, the doctor/patient relationship has drastically changed.  Now the doctor/patient relationship seems to be increasingly adversarial.  It ain't like it used to be (bad grammar used for emphasis).  I wish we could get back to the times in our distant past when doctors and patients had each others' best interests at heart.  Sigh . . .

They should be reported to their state governing license bureau.  You would be surprised at the attention they would give this case.  Failure to treat, negligence, abandonment, medical abuse.

THIS IS HORRIBLE!!!!! SO UNPROFESSIONAL!!!

Doctors following each other apparently afraid to go against another doctor.  I feel so badly for her and I'm worried about her.  How will she get through this?

OK,  I have a dodge caravan but someone else will have to drive it.  We can manage total of 6 including the driver.  I will try to drive very slowly to Lulu's then we will do a sweep and pick more of you up.  Bring placards, large markers and sticks and glue.

We can make our plan while driving-----ROAD TRIP!!!!!
