Neuro Physiotherapist/horseriding

Hi Guys,
I just thought seeing there had been so much discussion about Horse Riding and MS that I would let you know the feedback I got from my neuro physiotherapist today.

I have been having physio for a horse related fall, where I landed rather badly on my back.  I have been having both Bowen Therapy and Physio from a neuro physio, (so she specialises in physio for people with neurological problems)

My physio encourages horse riding, she said it was good for me providing I have a kind mount, so for those who like riding and have access to a QUIET horse, she advocates that you do it, the benefits are huge!
Apparently even with my health issues I am more flexible than most people my age, now I put this down to my riding, it helps maintain balance, posture, fitness and flexability.
It was interesting experience, she has given me exercises and also wants to do strength testing on me so she has a baseline to go on should my TM strike again.
She made me do many things that my neuro makes me do, I think to see the way I walk, if I have a tremor etc. etc., she seemed very up on MS and TM. I am going back for more physio.

I recommend it totally.
Hope all is well

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your comments.

Alex I hope that you enjoyed your ride, I find riding in the morning, before it gets hot and just for a short period of time rather than overdoing it is the key.

Jem rebook and enjoy the experience, it is very up lifting to get on a horse.

I think there  was another person on here too that was wanting to go riding but the riding school would not accept them.  What a load of bollocks, surely they could lead you off another horse. Hmmm As I said where I live the MS Society has horse riding for its members.!

Susan, thanks for your comments, I think that physio is great, and pain which can arise from MS or Transverse Myelitis can be very difficult to treat.  I do have a lot of pain syndromes, but my lower back pain was related to my fall, not my neurological problems, but it makes the task more difficult to assess as I have leg spasms on and off anyway, so sometimes it is difficult to see if they are from my fall or from my TM.  Bowen Therapy is popular here in Australia and many physio's seem to be doing this as well, my friend who had whip lash from a car accident said it was the best thing that she has ever had.  My back is still sore, so I am uncertain if I have benefited from it yet, but I only had one session but it was just a nice relaxing thing to have done, I did feel very good afterwards.  The other physio that I seen was very interested in how I walk, what movement disorders I have etc. because her training is in neuro physio.  She was very informed, which impressed me as half the Drs don't seem to know what TM is and she was very observant, she could tell things about me very quickly, and it was a bonus that she encouraged me to ride, which I did today, first time in 7 weeks since I came off and I loved it.
I swim also, daily over the summer mths
Cheers,
Udkas

I am going riding today. My mount was lame last week so I could not ride.  I found this book at the used book store Fitness, Performance and the Female Equestrian it has all these stretches. I hope your back is better soon.
