Neuro called back with the game plan

Bottom line is, he doesn't know where to go from here. He said we have the option of doing short term high dose steroids in case another big episode comes along, but other than that, he brought up trying to get into Mayo Clinic or seeing someone at the university hospitals in the city. His suggestion was to start with general neurology since the general consensus all around is this is not MS and may not be immune related at all. So in that vein, the neuroimmunologists weren't the specialists to see either.

I'm sort of stuck. I'd like to go to Northwestern, as that's the highest rated in neurology in the area. However, when I look through their list of practicing docs, I don't see any that quite fit the situation.

I'm ever more tempted to ask my insurance company who I should see. Not kidding.

I need help figuring this out. Otherwise, I'm just going to sit on my duff until something new comes along, see the local and get shot up with steroids, which I don't need, because I found out my bones aren't in the greatest shape.

You're such a trooper. I'm not feeling very soldier-like lately. I don't know where to look for a general neuro that would be any different than the others I've seen. You know? None of them know what to do. How is a general at a university hospital going to be that much different?

What do you look for in a neuro? Someone who specializes in the issues you've been having? Mine are all over the board. Ears, eyes, balance, neuromuscular, bowel/bladder, constitutional, and thanks to this entire process -> emotional.

I'm so sick of this roller coaster. I want off.

Well, Jumpin, remember my last visit with "stupid" that told me there was nothing more he could do for me and all another neuro would offer was vitamin D.  Three months waiting for a new neuro, I was dx within 24 hours and in treatment.

Keep on truckin.....

I don't know what's wrong here, but this news sort of put a wet blanket on my day and I just feel like crying. :-( Am I over-reacting?

Thank you. I could go at this from several different angles. They have departments with specialists for neuropsych, neuro-otology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuroimmunology, circadian rhythm and sleep disorders, and then there are the migraine specialists.

The general neurologist are more interested in dementias, Parkinson's, strokes and that sort of thing. None of that seems to fit what's happening so I can't help but think going to one with those interests would be a waste of time and money.

It has me stumped. I'm not sure where to go from here and am not getting much direction from the docs. I can't go to Mayo at this point as funds are limited. Until I get my energy and stamina back, I'm not able to work enough to fund the trip.

Would it be out of line to consult with the head or assistant head of the neurology department for the appropriate referral?
