What a stupid lady! Just like there are good and bad people of all types I am sure that the same goes for dogs. I am so glad that Polly didn't hear. She doesn't need her feelings hurt especially after working so hard.
I think just about any dog could probably be a service dog if they show the potential for it. I even knew of someone who had ad deaf service dog. I know of others who had Great Danes and Portuguese Water Dogs, German Shepherds and even Pit Bulls!
My last dog was a Lab/St. Bernard mix and he was the PERFECT dog (Although as his mom, I might be biased.) I think that he could have been a service dog or at the least a therapy dog. He was smart, calm, well-behaved, easily trainable, never barked. Sadly we adopted him late in life, so he never had that opportunity but he brought our family a lot of joy.
The headquarters for the agency Paws with a Cause which trains assistance dogs is down the road a few miles from my house and I know for a fact that while most of their dogs are Labrador and Golden Retrievers they have other types of assistance dogs as well as small terrier-sized dogs.
My new dog, Luna is a Chocolate Lab mix who was found by a friend as a stray. She is very good-natured and I am hoping that she will be able to be a therapy dog.
I had some ignorant woman announce to everyone in the library that she worked for the AKC and she knew for a fact Dalmatians can't be Service Dogs. Lucky for her I was talking to someone new to our MS Support Group. Luckily Polly did not hear her.

I also told her about Polly and that she was a dalmatian. :)
