OT Rough couple of days

Late Thursday night my friend Dave was taken to the VA is severe pain and was admitted early Friday morning. He was again having problems with his stomach ( hernia ). So I had to make the 2 hour trip up to Nashville to bring him things like his phone ( they don't let you call out on the hospital phones).

He looked really bad when I got there despite them having him on large dosage of morphine. They had not made up their mind as to what to do with him as they felt he was too sick to perform surgery and they really didn't want to do it since he had had so many surgeries in the past.

It was almost 8PM by the time I got back home exhausted. I didn't even have the strength left to make myself dinner and had just some crackers with peanut butter.  Then Saturday morning I got woken up when Dave called to say he was in the Surgery ICU. So again I was on my way up to the VA. Over night he had started running a fever so they doctors decided they had no choice but to go inside and see what was going on.

I go to the VA about 15 minutes before they took him to surgery and the surgeon was in the room at the time. She explained that they were expecting they might have to remove some of his intestine and maybe put in some kind of drain ( can't remember the term) so that he would be going through his stomach for BM. He was to get back from surgery about 3PM so I settled in for the long wait ( 4 hours) in the waiting room.

Well finally at 5PM I got a hold of a nurse in the SICU and it turned out Dave had gotten back from surgery by 3PM but no one bothered to let me know. The surgery went a lot better than expected ( no extreme measures needed) and Dave looked a lot better than the last time he had this kind of surgery. A small flap of the mesh from his last surgery had adhered to another section twisting things up a little bit. So that was all that needed to be fixed.

It was about 8PM again by the time I got home and again had just crackers and peanut butter for dinner. They said they will probably keep Dave until next Thursday or Friday to make sure he is doing OK.

D- I am so glad that you and Dave are such good friends- it makes it so much better knowing someone is there for you.

Tell Dave to follow the doctors' orders and feel better real soon.

Sounds like Dave dodged a bullet there.  I hope he recovers swiftly and that you get some nutrition and some rest.  Can't have you both incapacitated.

Sending good vibes to both of you.

I have been paying for this a lot today. Slept most of the day, pain showing up in new places, blurry vision, more bladder / bowel leakage, etc.

It probably also doesn't help that I have to take care of Dave's dog in this heat ( playing catch so he doesn't feel like he has been abandoned ), feeding and watering. I feel really bad about his dog as he really misses Dave. After I throw the ball for him he will stop and look up the driveway for a while before bringing back the ball.

Tonight I plan on taking one of my pain pills to knock me out for a while so that my pain doesn't keep me awake.

Hi Dennis

I'm glad to hear that your friend is doing much better after surgery. Stress is bad for MS as is not eating. I hope you are giving yourself some down time to recharge.

Take care-
Kristi
