Reading Materials Question ??

Is it just me? Or, does anyone else miss getting learning materials in the mail? Remember when you could sign up, receive a free mag. and, while sitting on the sofa with you legs up, grab it, read the articles, put it down, only to pick it up again later and finish it? Or re-read it until it sinks in?

I'm all for downloading issues on topic of interest of mags for free - but not ALL of them.

I seriously miss some fact filled magazines that would come with the seasons. I miss the good stuff in the mail, Now it's all bills :( Is it just me? And, should I just learn to live with it because of the era we live in?

I miss them as well. The biggest advantage of paper mags? I could leave them in the bathroom and my husband would actually read them ;-)

Do you get NEUROLOGY NOW?  It is a few pub from AAN and has a wide variety of disorders covered - it always makes for good reading.

I agree with your comments.  Patients are the most informed consumers about their health and need to voracious readers.  I am a physician who is working with a new alternative therapy for MS and other neurodegenerative conditions.  Interestingly, I have had remarkable improvements not seen with any other therapy.  I want to spread the word, but my anecdotal experience isn't being published in the lay literature
That is unfortunate for patients.

New print publication available from NARCOMS.

I received the folloing email from them this morning.

"We are very excited to announce the first issue of the new "NARCOMS Now" magazine will be coming in April! ***The magazine will be mailed to EVERY participant in an open format - it will not be delivered in a sealed envelope. The magazine will contain information summarizing data collected from NARCOMS and other topics relating to Multiple Sclerosis.***

If you would prefer to access the magazine online and NOT receive a paper copy, please notify the NARCOMS Registry via toll free telephone at 1-800-253-7884 or by e-mail at ***@**** and we will remove your name from the mailing list. If you would like to receive the magazine in the mail, no action is required.

Thank you, The NARCOMS Registry Staff"

Funny you brought this up recently as just today in the mail I received a Fall 2011 newsletter from the Nancy Davis Foundation.

Topics include coverage of both the 2011 Race to Erase MS gala with lots of pics as well as the Annual Forum and Expo held the morning after the gala; articles written by participating physicians who receive funding from this foundation (eg re: imbalance and falls, fatigue, chronic pain, tips for travelling, technology to help with heat and foot drop), an overview of various research efforts incl. those by researchers in the 'Young Investigator' research program which supports through grants the best and the brightest young minds doing MS research, and submissions from MS patients about what it's like for them living with this disease.

It's a substantial newsletter, 20 pages in total, glossy and in colour, and full of the kind of info which is of interest to many of us here.  You can download it from their website or for those like Shell and me who enjoy things in print, subscribe to receive it in the mail.

You can do so by going to: http://www.erasems.org/newsletter/ and subscribing online.

ps:  I was actually just thinking about this recently, lamenting about no longer getting the newspaper made of actual paper.  I started reading the National Post online a while back as it was more convenient (can't get home delivey of it where I live) and it really is an unnecessary waste of paper.  But it's just not quite the same curling up with my coffee and laptop on Sunday morning.

Me too!   I used to get Multiple Sclerosis Journal bi-monthly from Sage Publishers, mind you it wasn't free, it's rather costly at $375/yr.  So I dropped the print subscription and just had e-access to the articles which was about $50 cheaper.  After a while I realized it was wasted on me: a very good technical journal with about 95% of the content way over my non-scientific head.  And I has actually read, or should I say tried to read, the mailed copy more often than the online one.  I too enjoy the physically tangible over electronic .  Anyway now I just get the free alerts when new articles are published, which includes abstracts.  I'm better off saving my money for literature better suited to my layperson's comprehension level.

Still miss getting those packages in the mail every other month though!

I still get "the Motivator" from MSAA and "Life in Action" from United Spinal Association. Yes I like the hands on. Especially since sitting at a computer is not always easy. I actually flip through them a lot. Then I pass them on to friends with MS. Some articles are older but since they deal with life stragies they do not go out of date.
