Recovering from 5 days of IV Steroids

Hello my name is Margaret and in 1998 I was diagnosed with MS.....To tell you where I am at right now.....I have been taking Copaxone for as long as I have had MS.  I don't really remember how many relapses I have had in which I needed steroids.  To guess I would say 5 or 6.  I just had a bad relapse which prevented me from walking so my MS neurologist gave me 5 days of IV Steroids.  I finished taking it 2 days ago.....I can walk now....concentrating in my walking motions and lifting and feeling my legs.  I am extremely happy that steroids can make a MS paitent who is having difficult time walking....walk again.  The only thing I am feeling is as if a truck or train has run over my body over and over and over again....Getting dressed touching my skin laying down it all hurts....I don't remember how it was when I last had steroids....it's been about 5 years and I am hoping that this will subside.  My vision is slightly weaker but I can walk and that makes me happy.  I know this new pain will go away....I have had MS for 17 years and this is my fist time posting anything in a discussion room about my MS..:-)

Hello Maggie,

Welcome!

I was dx in January and have had the IV Steroids done 3 times since Sept 2014.  I first had the Optic Neuritis in Sept. (which lead to the dx in January 2015) I hesitated to have the Steroid treatments this last time because of the side effects that I have with them. I do not sleep much when on them so I also feel like I was run over by a MAC Truck.  This is the term I used last time. This lasts about a week after the steroids are compete for me.

Hope you feel better soon!
Again Welcome to the forum, this is a wonderful place with lots of help.

Hi Maggie,

Welcome :) i was only diagnosed at the beginning of this year and i have already posted twice, i find these forums really helpful.

I had 3 days of IV steroids after my last mri as it showed active lesions. I found that i was exhausted after the steroids, i was extra sensitive and experienced some muscle soreness (whether these symptoms were a result of the steroids I'm unsure but don't know what else they could have been from...) but this all cleared up after a few days. If your not feeling better soon definitely get in touch with your doctor.
All the best,
JL

Hi there and welcome to the MS community!

I can totally relate to what you are feeling as I always have had the feeling that a truck has run over me several times when I have had IV steroids. I also get some blurred vision and flushing which makes me resemble a tomato lol.

I tend to get most of my pain post steroids around my neck and shoulders which makes lying down really painful. It's almost like someone has beaten you with a baseball bat or something. The good news is it eases and eventually will settle completely.

Again welcome to the MS forum.

Take Care,

Karry.

Hi Margaret, and welcome to our forum.

Steroids can give wonderful relief, which sometimes comes at a price. Only the patient can decide if that price is too high.

Possibly Copaxone works well for you and it's a drug you should stay on for the foreseeable future, but also possibly one of the newer drugs would be more effective for you. There are many newer drugs since you started on this journey. Have you talked this over with your neuro? We have lots of collective experience here, not to mention lots of opinions

Welcome Maggie,
Steroids can do different things to different people.I have not experienced what you are describing. I mostly do too much and crash when I am off the steroids. There can be a rebound effect with steroids where you feel worse than you did at the beginning. It is usually temporary. Welcome to the forum.
