Solumedrol and flare-up

Hi - I took a 3 day course of Solumedrol 2 weeks ago.  For the first few days my pain, tingling, numbless and burning went away.  They are now back and more severe than prior to the Solumedrol regime.  Is this normal?  I actually believe I was on the verge of a flare up prior to starting the Solumedrol and believe I am now in a full blown flare up.  I am seeing my Neuro tomorrow and I'm wondering if he will suggest another round of the drug.  It made me feel horrible and I really dread having to go through it again but I also know I can't continue to have "spells" where my legs burn like fire and I am unable to walk.  I'm frustrated and any info you guys can provide is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Tammy,

Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your experience.  I saw the Neuro this morning  and he confirmed I am having a flare-up.  He put me on 300 mg per day of Lyrica and suggested I have another round of Solumedrol in two weeks (he wants there to be 30 days between the first round and the next one).  I have read a lot of good and a lot of bad things about Lyrica.  I understand it makes you sleepy - which will be good when I take the dose at night because I am having a lot of problems sleeping.  However I'm really concerned about the things I have read about weight gain and Lyrica.  Have you had any experience with Lyrica?

I've been on lyrica for almost two years 150mg twice a day for diabetic neuropathy. It works really well. I was on gabapentin 300 twice a day until i got used to it. I hope it works for you.  I had my first dose of solumedrol for the first time for facial swelling, rash etc.

Hi Andi!
Solumedrol is a high dose of steroids also called Methylprednisolone

Methylprednisolone is in a class of drugs called steroids. Methylprednisolone prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.

Methylprednisolone is used to treat many different conditions such as allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, MS,lupus, psoriasis, or breathing disorders.
(I took the above from an Internet website)

All I know is that I had this through IV for 3 days at 1000 mg per day!  Ewwwww!  No, seriously, it helped with the numbness I had and visual problems, but the side effects were horrible for me.

I don't know anything about the Gabapentin, but have seen it mentioned here several times....I hope someone else will chime in here for ya!

Feel Well, Andi....

Hi Kim

First I would like to say that I am so sorry that you're going through this in the first place.....

I also wanted to chime in here because I've had a horrible experience with Solumedrol as well.....Back in March I had extreme leg and groin numbness and went on IV Solumedrol for 3 days....I had a nasty reaction to it, but it DID take away the numbness and vision problems almost immediately....Well, within 48 hours anyway.....

In May the left side of my head and face went numb and because I was visiting the MS Clinic at that time, I declined the Solumedrol treatment.....That numbness didn't go away for 20 days.....but it did go away....

I guess it's up to you whether you want that treatment or not...I'm not really sure what else to tell you...I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone....

Take care and keep us posted as to what the doc says....

Tammy
