Started my 3 x day IV today

Hi all

been into hospital today had my initial 2 hr session of IV steroid treatment.

I have come back home with my IV catheter still attached because im going back into hospital rest of the week daily, but only got to have 1 hr sessions.

Its all ok apart from taste of metal, when i drink water they told me i gotta drink least 2 litres in 24 hrs.  They said i might be pacing the house at 3am - a bit hyperactive.

Im ok apart from i look like an advertisement for a bad car accident with both my arms now bandaged and my neck collar ha ha ha xxx

I had 4 days of this steroid, Didnt have any blood work done in between. I dont feel much different. Still numb in my right hand. Some numbness went away from my arm and facial pain gone. So i guess thats a big plus. And not as sensitive on right side of body. But can you really tel if you have ms with just one mri done and they say consistant with ms. This is all nuts i tell ya.

hi jan and lulu,

from some one who has many many many rounds of i.v., a little of my advice:))
caution with amountcandy and anything sugar while on steroids (sucking on  one candy isn't bad , but if you have that taste longer in the day try sugarfree?)
also, steroids can depleat your potasium levels, so try adding high potasium foods

I always did my treatments at my g.p. office, i remember it only took less than an hour. I would have my 'buff cap' (i.v.) taken out afterr day three and new one for last two.
depending how many days you have them, be sure to question them if you are to have a CBC (complete blood count)   done part way. They run mine after day three before administer fourth.
Drinking water is good, but make sure you getting some electrolyes replace.

good luck girls, and i aam hoping for  both your good relief

Jan,

Did they offer you mints to suck on while you have the medicine? If not, tomorrow bring your own. They do help with the metal taste. Also, I would get a headache, and there is a med they can give you for that (I tried it once and it did not work) but just OTC tylenol headache worked for me.

I highly recommend asking for something to help you sleep. It took me about 4 weeks after my last prednisone pill (I was on the prednisone taper for 3 weeks) for the effects of the steroids to completely leave my body. In all that time I never slept longer than 5 hours...and only that long because of the meds they gave me to help.

I hope the rest of the IV days go smoothly and it helps!
((hugs))

HI Jan,
I just did my first round yesterday, but I'm finishing it with 2 days of oral med instead of IV.  Are you sure they are pushing the other two IVs that fast?  That sounds much too fast for this - they told me it is a minmum of 1 hr 15 minutes.  You don't want it rushed.

I sucked on mint candies and that helped the metal taste.  But I have to admit that I was awake at 4 AM after 3.5 hours of sleep.

Good luck with all this - we'll have to compare notes.

best, Lu
