Step towards helping myself

Hi,

Losing my little dog the other day made me realize that I have been depending on my two wonderful dogs to keep me sane in my increasingly isolated world.

So I got someone to drive me to the local shopping centre and talked to the mobility scooter sales lady.  I took one for a test drive and bought one there and then.  It will be delivered on Tuesday. It's quite large and powerful but I will be able to take my remaining dog (Gidget) for a ride to the local park and go for a coffee at the local outdoor coffee shop.  I'm told that I can ask to be picked up in a maxi taxi and it will take me ( and my scooter) to the shopping centre as well.

I'm starting to feel that possibilities are opening up for me.

$4000. Well spent, I hope.  At least here in Australia it's free to register them to use on the road and footpath and even the insurance is provided free by the government.

I can't say I'm going to be a good driver but I'll be okay with practice.

Regards

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I am amazed how isolation and depression is so common amongst people with chronic illness.  I'm sure it must have some impact on our physical health as well.

I wish I had been more aware of the effects of chronic illness when I was well and I could have done much more voluntary work than I did.  Hindsight is wonderful isn't it?

I was grateful to the people on this site for being here to share knowledge....now I'm just grateful to you all for just being here,  I feel as if I do have someone out there to listen and care.

Thank you so very much.

And Alex...you sound like a really nice person to me, and that means you're definitely not worthless...it's what's inside that counts.

Regards

Good for you. It is such a loss losing a dog and I am still grieving for my cocker spaniel I lost three years ago. However you have recognised something really important in life that we can only make change happen for ourselves. By ordering a mobility scooter you have found a solution to a problem that could have escalated. Loneliness and isolation is debilitating and connecting with people helps us all.

Just to echo sg400's message to Alex. It is really tough battling with depression but listen to these folks on the forum. You reach out to us all with such compassion and understanding so don't forget how much you help us all and you are one in a million.

Best wishes to you all

Teeny - So glad for you. Mobility is not an issue for me, but I do tend to isolate myself. Nice reminder to push through when I am doing that to myself.

Alex - Next time you are telling yourself that you are worthless, please add this voice to the monologue - you help comfort and educate people more often than you probably realize. You are of value to me, and you've never even met me.

I am glad you are caring for yourself. Isolation is no good for any of us. My problem is not mobility as much as depression. I talk myself into thinking I am worthless.

Your little dog is so pleased with you.

Don't those moments of clarity feel wonderful?  Good for you to recognize your habits aren't what you want and get yourself bac out among the rest of the world.  May your scooter take you (and your dog!) to lots of new and exciting places.

best,
Lulu
