Wellbutrin

Has anyone had problems with this anti-depressant?  I am going back on Lexapro because Wellburtrin is really winding me up.  I am anxious and uptight.

I know this is one of the side effects.  I am on 10 mg of Lexapro and 150 of Wellbutrin right now.  I go off of the Wellbutrin on Tuesday.

I have heard great things about Wellbutrin including weight loss, but not for me. :-(

I am looking forward to being a little calmer!

i can relate. I had the same experience, although I can't stand the anorgasmia side effect from the SSRI and wellbutrin counteracts that so you can orgasm.

Hi bamajohn, and welcome to the Multiple Sclerosis forum.  It doesn't appear from your profile that you have MS, but are welcome to stay here anyway.

Many people with MS are treated for depression because it is a very common problem with MS.  Our use of Wellbutrin is probably in a different clinical context than what you are thinking of for your use.

welcome again, Lulu

All you can do is give it a try and see how you do on Wellbutrin.

I did go off of it because my blood pressure was increasing.

Talk to your doctor.

I generally have always had trouble making friends or associating.. At 41  I dont think Prozac is  been good. I think maybe Wellbutrin would be ok if it doesnt have the sexual side effects. I dont drink or drink much caffiene.  I just want to be able to chill enough to really enjoy people. Drugs do scare me for sure so I m really careful. I took Zanax when I was younger but drank a lot so  it was a horrible experience..Also I got the old hag which was scary as hell(sleep paralysis syndrom).  So I wanna try wellbutrin but dont wanna go nuts.

I'm a big Wellbutrin fan.  My depression and ADD were diagnosed about the same time.  I took tricyclics for a while, but they were too sedating.  Switched to an SSRI, but didn't like the most famous side effect.  The Wellbutrin is a good fit for me.  Keeps the depression down, and also helps with the ADD.  I used to take 150 mg morning and evening, but I kept forgetting the evening dose, and was doing fine without it, so my PCP made it official and changed the prescription.

The bad news is, it hasn't done a thing to suppress my appetite.

I'm becoming a firm believer in Mirapex. For many of us I think it may be benificial. I take it in combo with Trazadone, waiting for 1 mo eval. May need to up the mirapex, but feel like a new person since I've been on it!

I do wish they'd quit shooting crap at us, Q!

I've been on maximal doses of both Wellbutrin and Paxil for many years.  I weaned myself off Paxil once, felt fine for six months, then nearly lost my marbles altogether in a very short time.  Former PCP eventually added Wellbutrin because he couldn't up the Paxil any more.  The combination seems to have worked pretty well for me, and none of the negatives that others have mentioned have ever been a problem for me -- unless you count the fact that it doesn't help me with weight loss either.

Arrrgghh!  A med like an AD should be chosen as a "fit" for the patient and not because it's a doc favorite drug!  The one's that stimulate are best for people who have vegetative symptoms with their depression.  The one's with a more sedating profile are better for those with high anxiety, insomnia and agitation.

Sometimes it's a crap shoot and you need to work through a few of them to find the best fit.

The Baclofen makes me sleepy.  I take it 3 times a day.  I am taking neurontin 4 times a day. I am surprised I am awake half the time!

yes, I was told the same thing about weight loss being an additional benefit, but it sure hasn't worked that way for me either  :-(

I take the wellbutrin in the morning when I first get up - just before bed I am taking a combo of baclofen and norvasc (a heart drug) and I think the two together have a sedative effect.

Yes everyone is different.  I do not have generalized anxiety, but panic attacks.  And I also have Tachycardia.  My mind and insides need to be slowed down some.

The Lexapro was doing that for me.  However the Wellbutrin was helping me stay awake!  :-)

I have heard most everyone likes Wellbutrin and some even lose weight on it.  Not so lucky for me.

Hi all,
I am on Wellbutrin, have been since July, and my neuro just upped my dosage to 300mg/day.

I'm not an axious person.  I'm not an angry person.  And I'm not prone to psychotic episodes.  The doctor put me on wellbutrin because I spent a lot of time in the six months prior, doing nothing.  I lacked any motivation or drive.  Getting up and doing anything was a challenge.

He also put me on Baclofen at the same time, to help quiet the fatigue if it was coming from spasms.  The dosages of that were also increased, and I'm taking 60-80mg a day.

Truthfully I would love to stop both and see if they are really making a difference, but neither can be stopped cold turkey without the possibility of severe side effects.  So for now I will stick with the wellbutrin and the baclofen.

I'm like Terry, there are other drugs that I can't tolerate but these don't seem to be in that category.

be well, whether its with wellbutrin or something else!

There are some of us that find Wellbutrin to be a wonder drug.  I am one of them.

I have told my GP I would fight with him before I would give it up.  It has made such a change in my life.

I take it for generalized anxiety...it is the kind of anxiety that makes getting through the day almost impossible and when you do get through it you are fatigued from the fight.  GA is not the oh I am worried about my bills, it is the oh what if the sky falls type thing.

For me Wellbutrin has brought the everyday anxiety level down to a level where although I may have anxiety I am not living with unrealistic terror.  Knowing it is unrealistic doesn't help.

So although like any other medication, it it not for everyone but for the ones it helps it is a older drug but a miracle drug none the less.

I would encourage anyone who is beginning a new medication to read the side effects, discuss the drug with your doctor and pharmacist then make an informed decision.

Remember each of us are different.  For me codeine is a nightmare drug.  I get the same effects you are describing.  That doesn't mean everyone should lay off codeine.

take care and have a wonderful day.

What an awful experence!  I have been fortunante and have not have any type of emergency situations on Wellbutrin but I know it is keeping me wound up.

One of the reasons I stayed on it for as long as I have is because it helps keep me awake all day.

However I have a history of panic attacks and I have been fighting those feelings of panic attacks starting up again.

Plus I get irritated and uptight.  I don't like that.

Thanks for your response.

Ok, this year I was in a very bad way. My PCP recommended Lexapro, but he wanted me to "double check" with the neuro to see if that would mix with my meds ok.

The NP, took the message for neuro from me. The NP asked me if I had ever tried Wellbutrin. I said no, she said she would call me back.

She called me back, said she called Wellbutrin in for me. I asked her why not Lexapro? She said she "likes" Webutrin.

Anyway, one of my problems was insomnia, which I had told her already. The wellbutrin made me CRAZY. I didnt sleep at all, felt like I was on some sort of rediculous amount of caffiene, and I became almost psychotic. Literally. At midnight, my husband made me call my therapist and tell her what was going on. He was scared for me and my family,

The 1st thing the therapist said to me, was, "who the f#&%k put me on Welbutrin?!?!?!

She said that was NOT the right choice for me and  D/C immediately and call PCP the next day.  Needless to say, I am on Lexapro and doing really well. I no longer trust the NP at my neuros office, and will only speak directly with the doc now.

So, that is my experince with Wellbutrin.

Good lucl to you, these things are so hard to balance sometimes.

That was awful for you!!  I am tired of feeling anxious and overly angry.

I have not had a reaction to it as dramatic as yours though.

These drugs are scary.

I used Wellbutrin several years ago as a stop-smoking aid.  As expected after two weeks, the nicotine cravings decreased, BUT, there was an unexpected side effect.  I suppose it was like a bad acid trip (I wouldn't know).  We were out to dinner when the room began to "breathe," and the noise of the restaurant were bouncing off the walls.  I left the restaurant fast and crouched down behind a bush, covering my ears and eyes eliminating as much outside stimulus as possible.

A trip to the ER and a shot brought me back to earth.  I was a sobbing psycho apologizing for my behavior. I could not stop crying - my emotions were bouncing all over the place.   It was quite embarrassing.  After the shot, I became sane again and continued my evening as though nothing had happened.
