What's in a name?

Your screen/usernames often leave me wondering - just like those vanity car license plates that spell out cryptic messages. So I would like to know more about your screen name - is there a story behind it that you would like to share?

My name - Lulu - isn't what I started out with.  A couple months into this when I realized I would be sticking around here, I thought everyone else has a *fun* name, why shouldn't I do the same?

We have a dear friend who has a habit of calling all of us women friends *Lulu* when we gather to play cards.   Alzheimers runs in his family and he often says knowing all of us by one name now will be helpful later on.    He uses it as a term of endearment part of the time and as a curse other times.  :-)

I also think of this MiSerable disease as one lulu of a hand to be dealt.

Just plain *Lulu* was already taken so I put my birthyear behind the name - hence Lulu54.

So in a nutshell, that's the story behind my username.

What's your story?

Hi Lulu I am liking this post will take our mind of symtoms!

Its funny that you should bring up this subject I was just talking about my screen name yesterday. Originaly I was going to use my nick name Lolo but  thought it was too simular to yours and might confuse so I opt for tarter.

Tarter is is linked toothpaste and I have this thing about cleaning teeth and using all the toothpaste , My Dad would say Tarter what have you done with all that toothpaste.!!
I loved the taste of it you see.
Dad was an accountant  you see things had to tally up and we were going through tubes of the stuff.

The sad thing is I ended up with more fillings and tooth problems that any of my siblings which they find most amusing. Just goes to show you can over do things.
It will be interesting reading as the stories unfold Lulu I shall stay tuned into this post.

Have a good weekend tarter.

I hated coming up with a screen name.  It was the first time I had ever joined a forum and I wanted that privacy that come with anonymity.  Therefore, it had to be something that my friends with MS here at home would not recognized if they were members or joined. lol...I felt like anyone could tell who I was.  I was a wreck from all that was going on.

You see I joined in Oct 08.  The first time I had heard the would multiple sclerosis linked with my name had been in Aug 08, just a few months prior.

So I made a profile with no pic and choose the name saveone because I am passionate about saving discarded animals.  There is a saying, "Save one until there are none".

Now that's my story and I am sticking to it ;0)

take care and live well,

terry

ps. Lu I also love the thread and hope everyone participates.

Well, guess it's my turn. Several people have asked about this, and I don't blame them, as it's a bit wacky, I know.

'essdipity' is another way of putting 'S. Dipity,' which I have jokingly signed myself in other places in the past. It's short for Serendipity, a word I just plain like, and which I hope applies or will apply to my life. Serendipity is the knack of coming across good fortune by chance.

So I like to imagine myself bopping along (a bit dipity, after all) and having good things happen. And my real first name begins with S.

Now I want to change my name.  its too obvious..Zacksmomi.  Well I have  a son named Steve but I always wanted to name him zack.  No just kidding.  I am obviously Zack's mommy and on other forums zacksmommy is always taken so I changed it up a bit.

Fun post Lulu.  Good thinking.

Take care all

I have 2 rescued Boston Terriers and they are the center of my life! I found Petie on petfinder about 5.5 years ago and I always tell people he was the best $50 I have ever spent. Rocky came from a rescue group about 2.5 years ago. I'll probably never have any other kind of dog again - Bostons have the BEST personalities!!

Well, like Zachsmom, its not very creative, but I am proud of it.  My name is Debbie and I am the Nana of 4 wonderful little boys, who I love dearly and are the reason that I fight everyday to figure my symptoms out for (well myself too, but...you know) I want to be able to be around and do all the things that my wonderful grandmother did for me!!

My 8 year old Labrador retriever has the nickname "goofy" because he is a total goofball!  Thus the name "goofysmom"...  :)

My memory was shot when I started the forum so I went with my former career something I could remember for log in I am actually quite proud of having been a female Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Tech. At the time there were few of us. I drove a big service van and carried hundreds of pounds of equipment up ladders sometimes three stories high all day long. I worked on 135 degree roofs in summer and below freezing in winter. I still love mechanical things. Oh and I did this after dropping out of Grad School for Art History.

I had a lovely cat and her name was misty. She was delicate and smoky grey in colour. Hence the name misty.

She was killed by  a car on the road.  So I decided to call myself mistylee which was her full name as misty was gone.

Mine story's pretty simple. My name is Cassandra Roxanne...and I play bass and sing for a blues/rock band - when my health allows. So I just combined the two names to make Cassrox...figured it suited my favorite passtime.

Fluffy is my 15 1/2 year old three-legged cat with hyperthyroidism and inflammatory bowel disease.  He was born in a litter box, and the circulation to his leg was cut off by a mess of umbilical cords with 4 of his brothers and sisters; he fought to pull his way out and almost completely detached the leg.

I called and emergency vet line, who told me to tie off umbilical cords with dental floss, snip the last tendon on Fluffy's leg, and keep it clean.  I spent his early days caring for his wound, moving his siblings aside so he could nurse, and holding his tiny self against my chest, in awe of his strong will to survive and how amazing he was.

After all that, the bond was so strong he was like my son. He now weighs 16 pounds and is kind of a special needs son, needing medicine twice a day, expensive vet visits and special food.  He meows a lot, wakes me often, and I love him dearly.

So, when trying to come up with a screen name, Fluffysmom popped into my head, and that's my story.

Gee, I feel so boring.  I mean, what am I called by most of the people I know?  "Pastor Dan."

Reminds me of my one-armed endocrinologist.  I asked him what the story was about his prosthetic left arm, and he replied, "I was born that way; no story there."

Come to think of it, I think even his story's more of a story than mine.

What fun!

I was a Spanish Lit/Pre Med major in college.  I even had to read the entirety of Cervantes' "Don Quijote" in the original Renaissance spanish.  Afterward, I trained at LA County Med Center where my patient load was 90% Spanish-speaking only, so my oddball major served me well, then and often afterwards.

My favorite musical has always been Man of La Mancha - and, by nature I tilt at windmills.  So, I even think of myself as a quixotic person.

Gotta Windmill?  Just point me at it  "My destiny calls and I go..,"

it was just a screen name that popped into my head when i found this site last year. was just wondering at the time if anyone else was as frustrated as i was/am with this uphill climb to a diagnosis.

didn't take long to see i was not alone, here, and at veteran sites dedicated to those with MS and the added frustrations of dealing with the VA.

I'm just Nancy from Louisiana (originally) and Massachusetts (now).

On most other sites my screen name is the beginning of my email address (well, one of them anyway) - so, I wanted to choose something different.  It's a good thing.   There is a NancyT already on this list (my last initial also) and there was also another Nancy from MA (both of which I didn't know about when I started).

I've enjoyed all the other stories!  Just want to say to LoveMyBostons that I thought you were another Birkenstock wearer!  :-)   The Boston is one of the styles I wear.

doublevision1:  no big mystery here.  I had severe doublevision when I signed up two years ago, and was extremely troubled and preoccupied by it, as some of you from way back [Quix, ess, Rena, Heather, Moki, sllowe, etc] may recall.  I'll never forget all the great support I found here, as this symptom improved, torturously slowly, but improved nonetheless.  :)

I added the 1 since doublevision was already taken (as were all the various  nicknames bestowed on me over the years by friends and family: Lucy, SuzyQ, Jane, Raphael, etc. so no luck with using any of these)

doublevison1 has morphed into db1, db, deebs [Ess], dv, dv1, DeeVee [Quix].

My nieces couldn't say my name Monika when they were little and it always came out Moka. Somehow from there it morphed to Moki and then when they were teens they asked to call me that once again. But the imps improvised and called me Mokibear.

Hey dv, I remember and yup, I morphed it. lol

Shoshin (初心) is a Japanese Zen expression usually translated as "beginner's mind" (or heart-mind). I have always liked this expression. During my brief foray into Japanese calligraphy, those were the characters I practiced.

In the West, this expression is particularly associated with the Zen teacher Shunryu Suzuki Roshi who wrote a book called Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind and was fond of the expression, "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few."

I joined this forum after I was dx'd a couple years ago and then, as now, there were a lot of limbolanders. I felt like I only got dx'd because I found a neuro who started over at the beginning with no assumptions. It certainly never occurred to me that I had MS. I picked the name because it was my hope that everyone on here would find a neuro with "beginner's mind."

sho

PS It's even on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoshin which says "It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, even when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner in that subject would."

My photo says it all.  I've played guitar for 40 years!  The spelling of grrrl is because I live passionately.  I'm an alpha female, and not afraid to take on dangerous sports.

But part of being a grrrl is knowing when you're more of a liability than an asset on white water river multi-day/week river trips.  Sometimes being a grrrl includes riding "princess" on an oar rig!

Cheers,

What an interesting thread! I wanted to remain annonymous, just in case someone out there lurking new who I was (not that it probably matters) but at the time it seemed important.  so I choose Udkas, which means duck in Russian, my sister-in-law is from the Ukraine and she was trying to teach me Russian and for some reason this word has always stuck in my head and I knew that it would most likely not be taken.

Cheers,
Udkas.
