severe back pain

For the past 2 weeks or so I have had the most excruciating back pain radiating to my legs. I've been trying to blow it off the Fibromyalgia but it has only gotten worse.  To the point I sometimes have trouble ambulating normally. This is a new thing I have started expiriencing just in the past couple weeks.

I have been trying to brush it off but can't because it is so intense. It started out as just every once in a while during the day I would have this aweful pain and sometimes felt as if something had stung me in various places on my legs and feet.

So last Sunday, Mother's Day, it was really bad seemed to have only short term relief and then back again. Nothing seemed to make it better or worse.  By my doctors appointment this past Friday I had been crying most nights and days with not only trigeminal neuralgia as usual but also this aweful pain in my back and legs.

So when I went to my appointment on Friday I mentioned it to my GP being the thorough dr she is had me stand up and check range of motion. Then ordered an Xray. When she came back from reading my Xray she said : most people have natural curves in their spine and this is normal. I on the other hand have no curve whatsoever! This is not good she says. There is so much spasmic tension in my back it has pulled all the curve out of my spine and this is why it hurts so bad. She gave me muscle relaxers and recommended a massage asap. to get all that tension and spasms out. Then as I was leaving told her nurse that she was very surpised that I was even able to walk in that day.

Has anyone else had this type of thing happen with them? is this Spasticity or just tension and spasms? I have not been diagnosed with MS yet but have red flags my Neuro says.  Have MRI set up for June 4th as well as appointment with Neuro later that day.

Thanks!

So sorry you are experiencing this pain.  I hope that the muscle relaxers and other suggestions work!

Sometimes I seem to have the same pain, not sure if it is the same but my right leg is so stiff it seems to pull on my back.  Nighttime is the worse time, ugh......My GP also did the same thing I take extra muscle relaxer and pain med on those nights.  I keep thinking I can stretch it out...

Never thought of no stairs or resting it, I keep stretching thinking it will loosen..

Will keep you in my thought and hope they find something to ease your pain, it must be terrible.  Keep us posted please...

Hi, This is DJ (Shadows Sister), I just found an e-mail from Laura leading me to your post. I would have to say it sounds like you are having spams with spasticity, I hope they will be doing a Spinal MRI and a Brain MRI
I can understand the pain you are talking about. I am so sorry you are dealing with this type of pain.
I wish I could stay on line longer today, but I will be checking in with you, I am sure you have tried heat, some times it helps and sometimes I just have to wait for the spasms to quiet down on their own. Try not to bend over and stay off of the stairs if possible, rest as much as you can... I hope they can fine some thing to ease your pain...
I will be keeping you in my Prayers. I have many days that knowing Prayers are being said is what gets me through it from one minute to the next...
I'll check in on you the next time I am able to get on line.... Hugs & Prayers{{{{~!~}}}

Emschick,
This sounds painful - I have talked with DJ (shadowsister) about this problem because she has the extreme spinal spasms.  When she shows up (she's had surgery and is off for a while) you may want to talk to her about it.
I'm sorry you are experiencing this problem.

hey,
Why dont you get a lumbar mri so they can see if you have a herniated disk. Lower back pain that radiates down your legs is like classic for a herniated disk. I am not an md and not trying to dx u but I have several herniated disks among other problems, and am quite familiar with the problems that they create in the spine.  Cervical herniations can compress nerve roots and cause radicular pain, and lumbar henriations can cause radicular pain that radiates down the legs. And if this is the case you can have muscle spasms in the surrounding areas, as I do in the cervical and lumbar spine, more cervical for me for nerve compression at 2 levels and cord compression at 1 level.  Something to check out, it can be quite painful to say the least.

Any by the way I also have straightening of the natural cervical lordosis and scoliosis and these things promote herniations.

good luck

Hi, Chick. I'm so sorry you're having this awful pain. On top of TN that's a huge amount to deal with. I hope you've been given some kind of med to help until you see your neuro.

Fortunately for me I haven't had your condition, but I do want you to know that I'm pulling for you. Please keep us posted on how things go.
