wasp stings

I was stung 4 times by a wasp that flew up my pant leg and tried to sting its way out.  Failed.  However I have 4 3" diameter red circles around each sting site.  Never reacted this way with other stings.  Could it be my haywire autoimmune system or the copaxone I am on or my MS that exacerbated it?  Welcoming any thoughts. Was diagnosed in Jan.  I take a daily antihistimine.  I think I will apply a hydrocortisone tonight.  It is warm to the touch.  No itch.  Thanks

Hi

I am certainly no expert on your wasp stings however I did want to mention that the exact same thing happened to me a few years ago.  As my failing brain can recall I was on Copaxone for my MS when a huge Japanese Wasp flew up my mid-length around the house pants. I didn't know it was there but turned to step over the threshold of the front porch into the door and felt like I had been stuck with a hot knife above the knee. By the time my other foot hit the floor it had stung me 3 more times with the same force of the first one causing me to scream out in pain for my husband.

Ever ready my husband jumped to my side & said what is wrong? I told him something was inside my pants and moving fast up my leg and hurts like fire. He jerked down my pants and started stomping on my pants until we saw it!  It was not an average wasp.  This almost 3 inch long wide bodied black & yellow fuzzy beast was scary looking and still trying to fly.

With a last hard stomp from his boots it was dead. On the 1st above knee sting was about a 1+1/2 circle with blood dripping from the center already bright red. The next 3 stings were close in diameter which now was almost 2 inches high off my thigh with the sting site dripping in blood.

The shock & pain sent me into a mild seizure so I can relate if what stung you was one of these bad boys. We looked it up online to find a recent outbreak of these specific Japanese Wasp had been highly active in the southern states where we live and very uncommon. The ability to sting people over and over with the same force & appearance of the sting site kept me off my front porch entirely as we heard a low buzzing swarm between the porch boards. We have never used insecticides because of it's deadly toxic ability to both kill honey bees-which are now in danger of extinction-and highly danger to any humans, but we bombarded the front porch & back that year.

Maybe what stung you was more than a regular wasp. Being that I am also on Copaxone it could be the medication enhancing our reactions.  I sympathize either way with what you went through.  I agree you should ask your doctor about the agents in Copaxone to see if they know it to cause insect bites or stings to be enhanced with your reaction.  Anything is possible as the chemical breakdown may affect people differently.  Meanwhile- Ice is the only thing that eased that pain for my incident.  Stay healthy friend and let us know what you find out please.

Wonderfully kind of you to comment.  I had made up my mind that if the stung sites had not greatly improved by mid-week, off to urgent care I would go.  Thankfully the spots are barely visible now.  I will mention it to the doctor at my next visit.  I have been stung before, when not on copaxone but they were not as painful, nor did I react so severely.  Makes one wonder if it enhances a pseudo enemy scent to the insects.

Hi and welcome,

I'm sorry your question hasn't received a response yet, to be honest i'm still not exactly sure what the more likely answer is. In my family my self and both my kids experience over the top reactions to bites and stings, a simply mosquitoe bite creates a 2-3" welt to show up, so from my families perspective i wouldn't be surprised to see a reaction 4.3" after multiple wasp bites in one location.

I'm inclined to think it 'might be' related to the Copaxone but it's hard to know if this would be an unusual reaction with multiple wasp stings, you probably should speak to your doctor about this one....sorry i couldn't be very helpful!

Cheers.........JJ
