Side effects of TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt)

My husband just had the TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt) and I noticed his eyes are puffy every morning? This just started and they had the procedure 9 days ago.

My dad has cirrohsis and had the TIPS put in about a month ago.  His labs were all good after and they sent him home.  2 weeks later, he is acting like a zombie, he was admitted for high level of ammonia in his blood.  He was released Sunday and 3 days later he is acting like a zombie again.  He is going to the restroom somewhat normal.  And drinking and eatting when forced.  He is stuggling to take his meds., sometimes taking 45 min just to take the liquid meds.  I am 13 hours away from my dad.  Why is this happening?

I just read a comment on webmd about supplements L-Ornithine and L-Aspartate. They are amino acids and help reduce ammonia in the blood.

Hi there!

Puffiness of the eyes is unlikely to be a complication of the procedure. Likely possibilities that may need to be considered include liver/ renal issues, allergies/ inflammations etc. I would suggest getting this evaluated by his treating doctor for appropriate management at this time.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
