Brain Viruses

Hi,
My mom is 52 years old.  On her latest MRI scan, it was seen that there were viruses in her brain. Her brain is also swelling.  She is on a feeding tube. Sometimes she has fever, but it is not very high (around 37.5-37.8 degree Celsius).  She is currently taking Aciclovir.  She can neither talk nor is aware of her surroundings.  Can Aciclovir kill all the brain viruses? Or is there any other way to get rid of the brain viruses? How can the brain swelling be treated? If the brain swelling is treated, can she regain conciousness again? How long does it take typically to recover? Thank you for your time.

An MRI cannot determine whether or not there is a viral infection in the brain, so there is a misunderstanding regarding whether or not she has such a problem.

There are many "missing pieces" to this story.

As Londres70 stated, you just "have to wait and see".

I would not give up hope and make sure when you visit you hold her hand or keep a hand on her shoulder and talk to her. The fact she doesn't seem to respond does not mean she does not understand everything said around her.

Only time will tell how she responds to treatment, and it is difficult to say how long or when.  She is probably receiving the Acyclovir and steroids for the infection and swelling. Unfortunately, you all will have to wait and see.
