Cerebral Atrophy.. pls help

Hello, My father is 58 yrs old age, recently MRI scan report says that Diffuse Cerebral Atrophy and Multiple Lacunar Infarcts in Bilateral Centrum Semiovale. What does this mean.. from the past 3 months he is very abnormal and having memory loss.
Please help me.. any information about disease and diagnose will be helpful. what should we do.. how can we get him back to normal..

He started Medication.. what i frightened most is due to inefficient supply of blood to neurons diffuse brain cells.. even though after proper medication further atrophy can be arrested but cannot be able to regenerate the dead cells..
He is having lots of tension because of some legal issues and consumes alcohol daily..
After the report doctor adviced to stop consuming alcohol completely..

Hi.  Sorry to hear your father is having these problems.  

Simply put, Diffuse Cerebral Atrophy means there is shrinkage in the brain.

Multiple Lacunar Infarcts indicates multiple areas of a specific type of stroke. Bilateral Centrum Semiovale is the location in the brain of the stroke(s).  

From what I understand, these types of strokes can be caused due to a blockage. Hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking are risk factors to have these types of strokes.

It is possible for improvement.  Is he on any treatment now?
