Chiari and Trauma

Hi there.

I have been dating a wonderful girl who was diagnosed with Chiari as a child - and had some paralysing effects in one arm during her teens. She copes well nowadays, apart from the odd migrane every now and then.

She has recently taken up my passion of motorcycling - and rather than be ignorant, I was wondering what recommendations an expert would suggest for limiting or supporting any possible trauma in the event of an accident.

I have made her very aware of the risks, but i would like to limit them as much as possible, as she is obviously very important to me. I am looking into devices such as airbag jackets and neck braces; but as mentioned would appreciate a professional opinion.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi.

As you might be aware, chiari malformation makes a person prone to brain herniation. Make sure she does not get an impact on the head. Anything that will increase the pressure inside her head will increase the risk of herniation. Also, there is a limitation on extreme movements of the head. Avoid jackets which do not have protective cushions. Specifically, try to find out if you can get something which will prevent her head from extreme forward bending.

Get her blood pressure checked regularly.

I think this much should be enough. Don't know how much it was of help to you.

Thank you Dr, for your recommendations. The forward motions are something I would not have considered; so thank you. I will look into sourceing/manufacturing a brace for her to limit the forward motions.

Most of the air cushioned jackets we are looking at limit rear and side movement, and not forwards - so I will speak with the manufacturer, and see what they can do for me.

Unfortunately, she has come down with a serious case of sciatica at the moment, and is concerned of the long term implications - but we will take everything a step at a time.

Hi.

I am sure you will take good care of her. Has any MRI been done to find out the cause of sciatica ? Was there any acute event which led to sciatica ?
