nausea followed by temporary hand paralysis

Recently I had a very terrifying experience. I felt fine all day until late afternoon, when I began feeling quite nauseated. It's been going around in my household, so I thought I was coming down with a stomach bug. I laid down on the couch for a few hours, sleeping on and off. At one point I thought for certain I was about to vomit, so I sat up a little and reached for my bowl. At this point I became extremely lightheaded and my hands began to feel tingly and numb. Quickly it progressed to the point that my hands were clenched tightly closed and I couldn't open them. They were cramping and it was really painful. The tingling and numbness spread to my legs, my abdomen, and my face. My legs were going all over the place but I really can't say if this was involuntary or if I was just panicking and squirming.

My husband called 911, and as the paramedics evaluated me I began to feel a little better. My hands were still stiff, but I could open them with effort. The numbness and tingling gradually went away. I still felt nauseated and weak. My vitals were fine so my husband drove me to the ER. At the hospital, urine and blood tests were done as well as an EKG. The only thing that showed up was that I was slightly dehydrated. I typically drink plenty of water but by this point it had been several hours since I had had anything to eat or drink. I was given two bags of fluids via IV, my blood pressure dropped (70-something over 40-something) and my heart rate went over 100. This eventually got into the normal range by the time the second bag was gone.

After waiting for hours a nurse came in to discharge me, with no explanation. My papers said "dizzy spell - unknown cause." I never told anyone I was dizzy. My husband tried to convince them to give me a CT scan but they refused, saying my symptoms did not warrant a CT scan. I am going to see a doctor tomorrow who will hopefully point me in the right direction for testing, etc. I don't have medical insurance, so I'm afraid this is going to be a problem.

For a little background, two months ago I had something similar happen. I began feeling nauseated in the early evening, went to bed, and woke up a few hours later feeling like I was going to vomit. I got out of bed and passed out, falling flat on my face. (This is why I had a bowl with me this time, for fear I would pass out on the way to the bathroom). When I came to my hands were tingling and numb and clenched closed a bit, but I had some control. I made it to the bathroom to get sick and the feeling in my hands eventually returned to normal. Due to the no insurance, I didn't go to the doctor that time, thinking it was a strange fluke. Also, since childhood I have on occasion passed out when about to vomit - not every time, but it has happened more than once.  One time during a particularly violent episode of food poisoning a few years ago, I passed out several times in between vomiting. After the incident the other night, my mom and husband reminded me that another time I felt very nauseated, several years ago, I complained of numbness and tingling.

All of these incidents being years apart, I never thought much of any of them. However, what happened the other night was too scary. I have four young children and I can't take the chance of something like this happening again. If anyone has any leads, tips, ideas, or anything useful I would very much appreciate it. Since I have no insurance I am quite convinced I won't be getting top notch health care. It might be helpful if I have something to go on. Sorry this is so long, but I felt the details were necessary for a full idea of what might be going on here. Thank you for taking the time to read.

I have had the exact same thing happen to me. I already have seizures that I take I take a daily medication for. When I had this happen a couple weeks ago the neurologist determined that it was what they call a tonic seizure. So if you are having these things happen, you need to go to a neurologist and have an EKG or EEG done on your brain to see if you are having seizures.  I was not diagnosed with seizures until I was in my 30s. For years I always thought, as did many doctors, that it was low blood sugar but it was actually temporal seizures.  Be safe and sure. Your brain is nothing to play with.

My daughter is experiencing many of the same symptoms as many people on this site.  She was just ordered to wear a heart monitor by her doctor.  We are extremely concerned. Have you found out anything since your last post.

I’ve had these same experiences multiple times over the last 20 years. It matches what everyone else has said so I won’t repeat the story, but has always accompanied vomiting or diarrhea or both. The most recent occurrence was a few weeks ago, nausea and the claw-hands started. I gagged myself with a toothbrush to induce vomiting before I lost control of my hands completely, and the claw-hands reversed almost immediately. This may not work for everyone, some of your stories say it happened after you vomited, but if this is happening and you haven’t vomited yet try inducing it.

Reading all the similar yet different experiences makes me wonder if it isn’t just one cause, or one answer. It seems to always correlate with stomach issues but under different circumstances. I’ve had the claw-demon take over my entire body- arms, legs, stomach, back, neck, face and tongue so I couldn’t speak. After having diarrhea it reversed course. I’ve also had severe vomiting and diarrhea and not had this happen at all, so it may be circumstantial or a combination of factors we haven’t figured out yet.

It’s a relief (in a way) that some of you have gone to the ER during these episodes and your vitals are good. Although terrifying and painful, knowing I’m not actually in danger helps it feel less scary.

Just had it happen to me. Had been feeling odd for the last 24 hours, felt somewhat better Kate evening and went out to try and mow our backyard. Finished and was very nauseous and dizzy and I hadn't had anything to eat all day. Went 8nside and sat in AC and then felt sicker and moved to the bathtub. My stomach began to hurt in a poop and throw up way and I did both. However after throwing up in the bath, my finger and hands began to tingle. It progressed very quickly to what felt like waves of vibrations in my forearms and hands and tingling like they had no blood flow and then like when your hand or arm goes to sleep. Then it felt painful and the waves were worse and started in my lower legs the same way. Seconds later my fingers and hands started to retract backwards toward my bicep and I could feel them or move them. It was like they were locked up like a muscle cramp but asleep and numb at the same time. I was freaking out and asked my wife to open my hands which she could but it hurt bad and they would shut again on thei own. I felt the same sensation. In my neck   and felt it slightly affect my throat and speech and I asked for help out of the bathtub because I thought i was going to drop and fall into the water. I got out and could barely walk and made it to the bed and laid on my back and I got sips of water from my wife because I couldn't grasp anything. I ate a peanut butter cracker and had sips of water and 9ver about 30 to 45 minturs it got better. .My wife wanted me to go to the ER at my wirst.in the bath but I said to wait. I got feeling back in legs and arms and hands mostly and went back into the bath to lay down as I tried Gatorade and water and gold fish. Was feeling better but then had the dizzy nausea feeling and called for my wife and then I threw up in the bath 4 to 5 times and lost all the fluid and stuff I ate. Seconds later the intense waves started in my fingers hands and arms and everything went numb again. However this time no clenching or retracted hands and fingers folding back like a backwards claw. I had a little in my feet but mostly after about 10 minutes this time it went away 95 percent. After finding this thread and reading and based off what happened to my I'd say it had to be lack of food and fluids I had the last 24 plus hours, maybe heat stroke, and motion sickness pushing the mower around. I think all combined with an electrolyte imbalance and dehydration and it was far worse this time. Hopefully this helps someone searching for an explanation. On a final note, my fingers and hands now hurt like I over worked them to failure. You can tell I had been gripping something tightly to failure. Aaron from Texas

Thank you for posting this!! I cannot find anything similar on the internet to what I experienced today. Sorry I don't have an answer but I just wanted to share this experience in case it helps find similarities. I just got out of a 14 day quarantine for traveling into a country Saturday. Meals were prepared 3 times a day and I drank only water and two cups of coffee a day, each day. I got out and drank beers and vodka mix drinks at dinner and two small cups of coffee in the mornings. I worked in an office all day (12 hours) on Monday. A little anxious to work because I was locked up for 14 days but not fatigued. I did not eat or drink anything after 1130am and caught a cab to go to the store across town. A little hungry but not starved. As we drove off I was looking at my phone trying to set up the payment and I started feeling car sick... I never, ever, get car sick. I stopped looking at my phone and started looking out the window. Nausea came hard and quick. I was sweating like crazy like I was hungover and about to puke. I started preparing my back pack to throw up but got the driver to pull over. When he did I took my mask off and stood on the side of the highway and tried to let it out but didn't. I also noticed my hands locked up out of nowhere in a weird way. My thumbs were extended and up against my fingers. Imagine  a sock puppet with his mouth closed. I had to physically open them with the opposite arm because I couldn't do so on my own. I stood breathing calmly and RFD sweating stopped but my hands were still stuck. I got back in the cab and we continued to the location. All the while I'm on my phone, awkwardly holding it and using my locked up hand to type. Everything I read about the symptoms seemed scary. But I hung on low sugars or something so I immediately grabbed a coke and some chips to hold me over for the moment. My hands weren't as stiff but they relaxed in the same pose. Not like a normal,  opened fist with the thumbs to the side. I quickly did what I had to do in town and went back. No additional nausea since I was out of the cab next to the highway but my hands still relaxed funny. I told my friends and they said drink some water and it should help. I downed a whole bottle then 3 cups at dinner. By the time we were done my hands were back to normal.
It took less than 5 minutes for it symptoms to go into full effect. 5- 10 for the nausea to clear. And about two to three hours before my hands went back to normal.
I take prescription strength iron supplements because I have low iron levels (not anemic though or a woman). I took a D2 prescription strength the morning prior. Supposed to take two a week for a few weeks but I was slacking. I take daily multivitamins and additional B12. I even ate a banana that morning by coincidence.
It had to be associated with dehydration. I didn't drink any water outside of what comes with coffee. And I did have one extra super strong cup of a friend's French press coffee. Instead of normal instant coffee. I thought that was what may have got my stomach kind of off in like an acidic kind of way. But that was at 10 on the morning.
I know this was long and drawn out but I wanted to share the details of the day leading up to the symptoms. I hope this helps and I hope we find an answer.

I have just had this happen. My fingers are still weak to the point where I am having to speak this instead of type it. I was in a zoom meeting and all of the sudden started feeling extremely sleepy. I have narcolepsy so this isn't abnormal for me, but it got to the point where I didn't think I could stay awake. I turned off my camera for a second and realized how dizzy I was and having trouble breathing. When I got up to get a drink of water I was beginning to black out the entire time, I got the water down and then I guess I went down all the way. When I stood up again I felt very hot, went to turn down the AC. I started thinking maybe I had the flu so I closed the zoom meeting completely and I went to the bathroom, still kind of blacking out as I was walking. When I threw up I threw up all clear. And it was not very much, once I threw up the nausea went away completely. but I realized my arms were freezing cold and it felt like I had had a shot of Novocaine in them all over, like going to the dentist but in my arms. That got worse for about 10 minutes, and I had some numb feeling in my face and forehead as well. Once I realized it I turned on a heating pad and put my arms down on it cuz I was freaked out and thankfully it didn't progress into what other people describe here. but I was concerned if it was a heart attack or stroke etc. My arms currently feel normal but I have extreme weakness in my hands which is why I had to write this with voice to text, and still a little bit of trouble getting a deep breath. My forehead still feels a little strange and having my eyes open is tiring but who knows. I have a bottle of Gatorade but I can't open it

I've had these types of experiences for years and seems like they got worse over the years but never happened enough for a doctor to think it was serious. Then I developed severe anxiety due to my son having anaphylactic food allergies and I started to over analyze every sensation I had after eating. I would almost pass out after having a bite of anything suspicious. But separate from that I would wake up feeling cold, and fearful with stomach cramps, get up to go to the bathroom and pass out as I sat on the toilet. Vomiting. Waking up to my husband saying I was making crazy noises. Anyway, I was diagnosed with very low B12 around 250, 5 years ago and only ever took vitamin supplements to correct and didn't have it rechecked until recently and it was still extremely low now 5 years later, 250. This can cause all kinds of physical as well as neurological problems. So get yours checked and know it can be low but not low enough to signal the doctor but still cause major problems. I was also very low in iron. My B12 is back to normal around 850 but I had to have B12 injections every week for a few months. Some people can't absorb B12 when taken internally, it has to be given through the blood.

Dont know whether my story relates but I too had vomiting sensation, knew that vomit was going to come out so ran to the wash room even though while walking the passage was rotating in front of me, i couldnt reach the wash room in time and some vomit went back in.  After vomit the first thing I realised is that my intake of food and water mechanism functioning has stopped and immediately notuced the normal reflux of the mouth for eating and drinking was not functioning.  I could spit out but could not take in any food or water, i thought it will correct itself but next day i found that the same.  Also facial distortion started after that which was diagnosed as Bell Palsy and was in the hospital for 5 days all battery of test done CT scan,MRI, 2D and 3D Echo, blood tests, Sonography, lipid profile, ENT, Gastro,ECG, etc all were normal first diagnised with Bell Palsy after 5 days still informed that diagnoses not completed.  I informed doctors that it was acute gastritis due to which vomitting hapenned and that i had H Pylori infection which could not be resolved after more than 23 years, was diagnised with antral gastritis with erosions, e histolytica in one report next report no ehistolytica, herpes virus infection HB always below since blood in spittum always there due to Antral Gastritis wo erosions.  Still nothing diagnosed. Even now left side of body touch sensation is there, can walk, talk and right side if body perfectly normal. Major issue not able to eat and drink anything and left side of body decreased body sensation. Could anyone help out

After doing some research, I discovered this tingling/numbness issue may be something called Tetany, which is a calcium/electrolyte deficiency that causes muscle cramps/contractions - often in the hands and feet.

I'm not 100% sure, but this seems to make the most sense.
Here is a link describing it or you could just google it.

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to this problem, but I thought I'd share because the same thing that's been described here happened to my 13 year old daughter today.

We had a bug run through our family this week, bringing nausea and general malaise to our kids. Nothing really out of the ordinary, except for my daughter today, who was the last one to get it.

She woke up in the morning throwing up, and continued to do so about every hour until late in the afternoon. Then on what I figured was just a regular trip to the bathroom to throw up, I heard instead a scream for help. When I rushed into to bathroom, I found her there sobbing and saying that she couldn't move. I wasn't sure what to do, as I had never experienced or seen anything like it. Her hands were clenched in like claws and toes were locked in with her feet immobile.

I picked her up off the floor and carried her to the couch. While on the way to the ER, the numbness and tingling moved to her face, mouth, even her tongue. She wasn't able to enunciate her words normally. The numbness/tingling did not subside until we had finally been admitted into the hospital, and even then, would return when she felt the need to throw up.

The doctor at the hospital simply attributed it to hyperventilating, and said for her to control her breathing or breathe into a paper bag. I know no one, including doctors, like to admit when they don't know something, but I think sometimes they find something "convenient" to explain symptoms. Of course not all doctors are this way, so if a medical professional happens to be reading this, I am referring to doctor we had tonight.

Anyway, they checked her blood, which like most all others who posted here, came back normal. They gave her an IV drip and some anti-nausea medication and sent us home.

After we got home from the hospital, which was much later in the night, she "locked" up again - hands and toes tingling and clenched up. Not as bad as the first time, but still happening.

I'm going to try to keep her on vitamin D and make sure she gets more potassium/electrolytes as others have suggested. I wish there was an explanation to this strange issue, but hopefully just reading these posts by others and realizing you're not alone gives some level of comfort.

This just happened to me. I woke up at 2 AM vomiting and diarrhea work from when I believe was from food poisoning. But my hands were pulled in and I could not move them I felt paralyzed. I have been drinking Pedialyte and eating bananas and drinking seven up and I do feel better. However I have not gone to the doctor yet. All of your responses do help to know that there is something that I should look into deeper. My family has a history of autoimmune disease.

The exact thing happened to me yesterday after I caught a virus. I'd thrown up a few times and then by the fifth time suddenly my hands, legs and face went completely numb which happened to me a couple times about 10 years ago in my teens but not this bad. That's why I continued to try to control it by breathing in an out and trying to make myself throw-up. However, this time was different because I felt paralysed and the numbness spread to my stomach and chest and I felt like my body was shrivelling up. It was hurting and I felt like my fingers might snap when I tried extremely hard to move them (which only slightly moved and my hand turned claw-like). I was breathing really heavy and my throat began to close up for about 10 seconds which is when we rang up emergency services.

My family started to massage my hands and were shocked to find my hands completely stiff. I already knew I was dehydrated and after taking sips of water and some fizzy drink (which I was able to stomach more than water) it began to calm gradually so it lasted 10-15mins. The doctors in England are useless, the emergency services contacted a local on-call doctor (we call them General Practitioners (GP)) who telephoned me and said to try and wait it out until the morning (during the phone call it gradually began to subside). After that phone call it started up again 5mins later. I was sat on the sofa with my whole body numb including my legs, one kept sticking out in front of me and I was making so much effort to push it back down but it just sprung back up again several times. I was then given sips of warm mint tea with sugar and this helped more than the water. I had two cups first and then a third to make sure it was gone. I then had another two in the next 2 hours and my mum massaged my back and arms to make sure all stiffness was gone. Finally after this I could only stomach a banana before I had ibuprofen and went to bed with a tired and aching body.

I have been to the doctors in the past because i have been concerned about my blood circulation. My hands, arms, feet, legs numb very easily if I put slight pressure on it. I feel like an old lady when I sit on the floor because it takes just 5mins before my butt, legs or feet go numb, my hands also go numb if I lean back on them. The doctors always say it is down to low iron however, I have taken iron tablets regularly for nearly 5 months with no difference. Doctors in England never do expensive tests until it is too late (seriously it is how they treat you if they profile you as a young and healthy person based on your age). I wake up in the middle of the night with a numb arm, shoulder, hip knee or something random like that most nights. I'm not overweight for my height and age.

Anyway, if anyone has figured out what causes this paralysis during vomiting please let me know. I will then need to push my doctors to send me for tests at the hospital in case there is some long-term underlying issue. I even gave a blood donation 6 months ago (after they asked me several questions and tested my blood to see if it was good enough) and they were shocked by how blue by arm went during the actual donation process. Seriously, this isn't normal and my GP was not concerned despite me explaining this. They seem to think it is a one-off when I numb all the time!
I’ve had these episodes for years. I hate it. They’re painful and scary. (About 4 times per year for 20 years!) Gastro nor neurologist could help me with an answer.

I'm so happy I found this page! My partner went through this tonight. He's been out at work in hot weather all day, only had breakfast and a 2ltr bottle of vimto to drink all day. It gets to 7.30 pm and he asks me to start tea as he was hungry, so I did. Half way through cooking tea he starts to complain of really strong stomache cramps. He goes to the toilet and has serious s**ts. 10 mins later he says hes feeling sick. He goes back to the loo and once again has serious s**ts. Then while doing that he starts to violently be sick. He then passes out on the floor. He was out for a good 10 seconds (may not sound alot but actually felt a life time considering I didn't know what was wrong with him) when he finally came round his hands where all cramped up and he kept saying they felt numb and he couldn't feel his feet.
After 15 mins he was back on the toilet. This time I couldn't leave him as once again his hands cramped and he looked like he was going to pass out again.
It took around half an hour for his hands and feet to start feeling normal again. But he carried on going to the toilet on and off while being sick most of the night.
This is the second time this has happened how ever he never passed out the first time and this time he was alot worse.

Reading through various comments on here this seems to be more common than I expected.
A few replies had me thinking.
1: yes I do think he was dehydrated as drinking a fizzy drink just isn't good anyway!
2: I think he's over worked and stressed
3: I feel hes lacking certain vitamins.

One things for sure it was scarey as hell to see my man like that passed out and cramped up. He's off to the doctors first thing for a vitamin D check too as that's what causes my numbness and blackouts.

Oh my goodness. I'm dealing with this right now!! I've been feeling this way for about 8 hours and all I want to do is sleep but I can't due to traveling numbness/chills/sweats in my body (and abnormal breathing). I'm so scared right now but I feel like the ER won't do me much good. I've been drinking coconut water, fruit/vegetable juice and bottle water but I don't feel much difference. If anyone has any diagnosis or findings, please let us know. Thanks
I see I am not the only one. It started in July of 2016. I was at the cheesecake factory eith friends and our dinner was about to be served. My friends called my name and as I looked over they asked if I was ok. I heard the talking of everyone turn to a buzz and start to go in and out, next thing I know, my head slammed backwards.  I managed to recover quickly, however,it was followed by hyperventilation, muscle seizing in the hands, numbness in my face and arms, abdominal cramping and my body felt extremely cold. After about a half hour, I was fine. Blood work was normal. Saturday September 3rd, I went to a party. Was out in the sun and felt very cold. My skin was cold as well. It had to be 80°+ outside. After I left the party, I went to work. I felt very nauseous and when my boss asked if I was ok I looked up at him and toppled over. I then started having the tingly numbness feeling and hyperventilation. I thought I was dehydrated as I thought last time. So I drank 2 cups of water and vomited. My whole body started locking up and was all starting to go numb. I managed to call a friend to take me to the hospital, and apparently blacked out in my car there were a few times I have stopped breathing. I was diagnosed with low potassium. Again, Tuesday September 6th. I was about an hour into work when the tingling and numbness started again. Major vertigo started. I talked to a coworker and he said I should go to the hospital. I told him I was gonna stick it out. I don't want to get fired for whatever keeps happening and not being reliable. About two hours go by of trying to remain alert and I went to use the restroom. I got up off the toilet and had a very bad dizzy spell and my ankle caved in, I fell to the floor. I got myself up quickly before I was unable to get up at all, the hyperventilation was starting again and as I pulled the bathroom door open, the muscle seizing started again. I clocked myself out and told a coworker I was going to the hospital. I tried staying aware while driving down the road and felt myself falling out of being aware of my surroundings a few times. The doctor told me this time it is my body probably saying I'm physically or mentally exhausted. All three times everything was different. Thinking maybe a lack of food or sleep. Lack of fluids. Exhaustion. The first time was on a day off, with almost no physical activity. Haven't eaten in 29 hours or had a drink of water in the past two days. Thought maybe it was dehydration. Second time, I had food, and fluids. I was thinking.... maybe it's dehydration from the sun?!? This time, I did everything right with poor results.  Doctor says I have low potassium and magnesium but not enough to be concerned about. Now, I lie in bed awake at 3 am, not able to sleep with a severe headache and slight neck pain. I don't want to seem crazy, but something is wrong! I should mention during all this time, I have not had any alcohol. Also only had vomiting once and never any diarrhea. If someone finds out what it is, please comment to this. I keep trying to stick it out. From the looks of most posts, it's potassium. However... it may be something more.

Five days ago I awoke feeling nauseous. I stayed in bed a bit longer, then felt abdominal cramping. In the bathroom I had some loose stools and then severe abdominal pain. I started vomiting which was mostly dry heaves, then both arms went completely numb and my hands clenched into a frozen position. We called 911, and they arrived in less than ten minutes. By then the numbness and hand clenching had subsided. All vitals including an EKG were normal. I declined transport to the hospital, but an hour later I went to the ER with pain again which was possibly a kidney stone. There is still no explanation for the numbness, but a common theme I see here is vomiting.

So I posted one back and just wanted to follow up because it seems people still find this page often.

a couple of days after my episode I got so sick I couldn't even get out of bed to go to the doctors. After sleeping for almost 2 days straight I managed to get enough energy to go. They took a bunch of blood samples and found my vitamin D was dangerously low and starting to effect my thyroid. Everything else people have suggested to cause this hand paralysis, like electrolytes and vitamin b was normal. Honestly I thought it was Lymne disease and thank god it wasn't. So the only conclusion I can draw at this point is somehow a combination of dehydration, lack of vitamin D and the extreme nausea triggered some kind of temporary nerve blockage to my hands.

I have to go on prescription supplements for a few months, so I was suggest getting your blood tested for anyone this happens to again.

Thank you for posting an update, as I was in the process of posting one myself.  I had another episode this past Monday.  While making a cup of coffee, I began to feel dizzy and had tunnel vision.  I knew I was going to pass out so I tried to hold onto the countertop.  Well I passed out anyway and woke up in my husbands arms,  disoriented and my arms and hands were drawn into "praying mantis" stance-paralyzed.  There was a puddle of vomit on the floor.  911 was called, spend the day in the ER, and my Dr. is seeing me Friday to wear a Holter monitor (heart).  I will show him your post and God willing...maybe have an answer to  post here.

Omg thank you for posting this. I just had a similar experience and thought I was dying. I get motion sickness a lot and there are certain types of cars that I can't even be in. I was a passenger in my friends car that I know I can always expect motion sickness. My nausea became so bad that I didn't know what what would happen next - then all of a sudden my hands became tingly and soon after they started to become numb. I started to feel it spread to my tongue when I started to freak out. we were on the highway so we couldn't just pull over. I have a history of panics attacks so I assumed it was just that. However I have not had an anxiety attack in almost a year and it felt different - like I didn't have the usual outer body experience i usually have when experience a panic attack, it just felt it was actually physical rather than in my head. Also with a panic attack I have never felt need to go to the hospital and with this experience I felt like I needed to go to the ER immediately. Luckily, this girl is practicely my sister and I had no problems sharing everything I was experiencing. I tried to shake it off but it got worse so I decided to stop moving completely. I started to instruct her the fastest way to get to a hospital but by the time we pulled off the highway it started to subside. The strangest part was that when my hand numbness got severe my nausea vanished. Almost like that's what it had to do to correct itself. Once I got to my destination I immediately stretched and within 30 min I felt completely normal.

Anyways, by the number of responses I'm surprised there aren't more websites that mention this motion sickness side effect.

Today I accepted I can never go on a cruise or into outer space.

Last weekend I woke up around 9am with a significantly bloated abdomen, pain in my upper and lower abdominal area, diarrhea, nausea, and sensitivity all over my body. I stayed in bed all day unless I was rushing to the bathroom. I would start sweating so heavily my hair was soaked and then I would get goose bumps and start shivering so hard my teeth chattered.

My husband and daughter weren't home and wouldn't be until around 10pm. My stomach hurt so bad and even though I kept making trips to the bathroom, it remained really bloated. Around 5pm I threw up. Around 7pm I was throwing up while having diarrhea.

After this final time that I threw up I could feel my face numbing and it felt like my eyelids were trembling. I turned to look in the mirror and saw that my face was actually sagging! Then I started feeling this extreme tingling coming down my face and neck and going all the way down my arms. My arms cramped up and my fingers were like super flexed. Some were sticking straight out and others were curled up. I thought I was going to pass out so i got down on the floor so I wouldn't crack my head open if I fell. My phone was in there on the floor with me and I was finally able to pick it up after several tries and hit speed dial for my husband. When he answered I tried to ask him to come home but it was like my tongue wouldn't do what I wanted it to and I sounded really odd. This scared the hell out of me and my poor husband who rushed home. I dropped the phone and lay on the bathroom floor for about 15 minutes waiting for him stuck in that position and then it started going down my left leg and it cramped up too. My foot flexed and I could not make any of it stop.

Finally after about 30 more minutes everything started relaxing. My husband really wanted me to go to the hospital or call an ambulance but honestly, I was so exhausted after being in that position for so long I could not imagine leaving the house. I am 40 and I'm super healthy. As I recently had a physical and blood work, I decided if I still felt badly the following day, I would go to the Dr then. That was a very stupid thing for me to think and do. I know realize this. However, I did feel better the next day and have not gone to be checked out yet.  From what all of you are saying I probably wouldn't have actually been diagnosed anyway.

Scary stuff.

You just described a stroke. I can't imagine nobody told you this. You must see a neurologist

I am having very similar episodes. I have had 3 in the last 9 days.  I woke in the night at 1 in the morning with severe abdominal pain. I went to the bathroom, thinking that I would diarrhea.  As I sat down and began to diarrhea, my entire abdomen and arms went numb and tingly.  It felt like limbs when they “fall asleep”.  My face, neck, and lips began to tingle as well.  I went to get toilet paper and my hands became stiff, fingers outstretched, and they were completely paralyzed.  The paralysis lasted about 10 minutes and then I called 911.  They found nothing abnormal at the ER, but my neck and face stayed tingly for several hours after the episode.  My bloodwork, brain MRI, and cervical spine MRI were normal.

Since then I have had random numbness in my arms, hands, and abdomen.  I have also had two more episodes in the night --- I wake up with numb arms, and begin shaking and jerking/twitching for about ten minutes.  Then when it stops I still feel strange, hot and cold and jittery.  But I never lose consciousness.

For about two months I have had nerve pain in the base of my skull/neck.  And regular abdominal pain. Doctors have no answer.

I am so glad to have found this forum!

I really thought I was dying and I would not see my family again...which did not help :0/. The only thing different with me is (I had severe diarrhea from 5:30 am to about 11 am the next day) that at 3 pm the first day, my body was in so much pain (aching), I took a 40 minute jacuzzi in very hot water.  I then showered immediately after to wash my hair and during that my arms started feeling tingly and I was getting dizzy/faint (I have fainted many times), so I grabbed the bar and stood there a second.  Stepped out of the shower and on to the toilet (yes, dreaded dirrahea, again).  I sat there a few minutes and my arms were still tingling.  I stood up and started to the living room and got very winded, so I headed back to bed....I felt like I was hyper ventilating, I was crying, and my arms were tingling very severely now.  I made it to the bed, barely and dropped.  My hands began to tighten up.  I tried calling my husband (he was at work) and got the call to go through.  By the time my husband got home (10 min) my hands were clenched up and my arms were not moving (all pulled tight into my torso) and the tingling was like nothing I have felt!  I tingling then proceeded to my legs.  I really thought I was having a stroke!  My whole tingling, ridged hands, severe tingling in arms and legs, lasted about 1/2 an hour.

My husband took me to the doctors, they thought I was having a stroke also.  After talking, they slowed up a bit and said a stroke was probably not the case.  They did blood work: potassium, A1C, sodium, liver check, ect...all came back normal.....no explaination.

I have a couple things going on that might have contributed:

1. I have some nerve pain in my neck that I have been dealing with.  RIght side, sharp pains down my shoulder to my arm /fingers and up my neck to my head, jawline, and from my neck down my back.

2.  I get migraines frequently.

3.  And for a number of years I have had RIGHT SIDE ONLY PAIN.  From Migraines down to my joints in my toes.  Mostly joint pain.

My husband thinks that there might be a connection there?  If anyone is dealing with any of these issues, do you think they may be related?   I am leaning towards dehydration, but not convinced.  But reading these stories helps to settle me a bit!

Yesterday evening I had a beer during dinner, after that I smoked a cigarette. I felt the cigarette was a little strong and nausea started in the car on my way home. In the elevator, while trying not to throw up, I felt my hands and arms, especially the left one going numb. I felt needles and cramps in my hands aswell. I got really scared thinking I am having a stroke. But he moment I threw up, I started getting better. Today I feel my left arm a very weak and your comment got me thinking: yesterday morning I woke up with a left side headache that was getting worse when opening my mouth. I have TMJ, I sleep with mouth guards and also my muscles become stiff pretty often. And your symptoms of pain in neck, head and jawline I had them for years. Muscle relaxers were helping me before. So yeah, I am thinking there is a connection...

This is the only place online that I've been able to find any similar accounts of what has happened to me now three times, under 3 very different circumstances. Hopefully these stories will help others to avoid this terrifying ordeal!

The first time this "hand cramping" happened to me, it was not preceded by nausea. I had been visiting my then-boyfriend in France, and consuming copious amounts of wine and very little amounts of water. Mid-intercourse, I felt my lips and face begin to go numb. Then, my arms and legs... Before I knew it, my hands had retracted into a stiff, clenched form. We both panicked, and my boyfriend quickly put me into the hot shower, where I began to work out the cramping in my hands. Because it was the first time this had happened, I just assumed it was the funky position I had been in. Little did I know, it was because I was over-dehydrated.

The second time this happened was after my Bachelorette party. I exhibited all the symptoms of these other posters - extreme nausea / vomiting & IBS, then tingling, then cramping, then extreme clenching. Luckily, my father is a surgeon and knew immediately that I was dehydrated and lacking electrolytes. Gatorade and saltine crackers saved my life that day...

The third time just happened this past weekend, which led me to this research. I was getting tattooed on my hip, and the painful part (shading) really started to get to me. I began to clench my hands in fists - and before I knew it, the "hand paralysis" had set in within minutes - only this time, it was over my entire body. I could not speak, I could not move my hands, or my legs. It was so extreme that we had to stop for the day. I have been re-hydrating and feel much better, but I am still sore and shaky from that day.

MORAL OF THESE STORIES : STAY HYDRATED, MY FRIENDS. Water and electrolytes help to keep your body in balance. This super-scary occurrence is usually avoidable! Good luck!

WOW The same thing happened to me and I am super happy to see I am not the only one! In my case, I was at a party the night before so I consumed lots of alcohol and woke up with a terrible hangover and nausea.

We had stayed at a friend's place that night so we got on the car to go home and that's when it all started. I started feeling super nauseous and powerless like I couldn't even hold my head up. Then I felt this tingling feeling in my hands, then in my legs and in face and soon after I realized I wasn't able to move my hands and my face properly!

Obviously I freaked out and told my husband to drive to a hospital. He thought I was exaggerating (and I think he still does to this day lol) but drove to the hospital anyways. The moment we entered the hospital car park I couldn't hold it anymore and vomited (luckily my husband had the time to stop the car and I puked outside haha) and that was it. All of a sudden all that tingling and numbness passed.

Since I didn't wanted to wait in the emergency like 2 hours then to be told I have a hangover, plus I just wanted to lay in my bed, we went home. The numbness/tingling never came back luckily, but I vomited like 7 times that day! Now, I do vomit from time to time when I have a hangover but never that much. I don't know what it was, but I still can't believe it was simply because I drank so much. I don't know if it was just an upset stomach as I ate the same thing as everyone else. And I couldn't find an answer on Google except this post so here I am :) Hopefully we can find an answer!
