Hand Tremors and Arm Tremors

I have hand and arm tremors and have had them for about 3yrs now. I was put on Topmax 100 2xs a day and was doing fine.  Now all of a sudden my hand tremors are coming back.  My father and his mother both have the same tremors as I do.  Without this medicine I cant lift a fork or spoon to my mouth without spilling what ever is on the fork or spoon off of it.  It is hard for me to work this way,  I am a cab driver and try to count money back and my hands shake and people look at me with such disgust on their face.  NO I DONT DO DRUGS PEOPLE.  You would be surprise on how many people think cabbies are druggies, and low lifes, Anyway what I wanted to know before I make a phone call, should I call my neuro guy or my primary guy and ask if maybe my meds should be upped some to take the tremors down again?  Or would I be wasting my time?

Thank you for taking time to answer my question.   Yes he has done these tests once before and I will be making a phone call to him again. Yes my head does sometimes get a tremor too.  Thank you once again for your time.

Hi there. These appear to be essential tremors where there is a problem with the nerves supplying certain muscles. There is no known specific cause and cerebellum could be affected. This can be seen in families and inherited. Usually affects hands, arms, head and eyelids. One may have trouble holding spoon or small objects, difficulty in writing, drawing, drinking from a cup and hence usually action related tremor. Your neurologist needs to assess you clinically any certain investigations if required like blood tests and MRI brain and spine. Treatment would include medicines like propranolol, primidone etc. hope this helps. Take care.
