Horrible Reaction to Amoxicillin

Horrible Reaction to Amoxicillin

I just took Amox on January 1st for a sinus infection. And I got really sick that night and the next two days I got more and more blisters all over my body.  I stopped taking the Amox after the first night.  I'm freaking out.  Literally blisters all over, on my face, my scalp, chest, arms, back, legs, everywhere. Its nasty and demoralizing.

I read that severe blistering is a side effect, but I think I'm having a severe allergic reaction to penicillin.

I went to Urgent Care today... Day 3 of this ordeal.  And doctor said he its more than likely an Allergic Reaction and then said but we can't rule anything out.  I was somewhat re-assured but man it's so widespread it has me freaking out a little bit and its ITCHY now.

Logic states he said, and I agree with him...  if I have never had a blister rash like this before and the day after I take Amoxicillin and I get a severe blister rash all over my body... it therefore must be a very bad allergic reaction to the Amox.

He said I have Vesicles and Pustules.

Vesicles - are a small fluid-filled blister
Pustules - are small, inflamed, pus-filled, blister-like lesions.

He prescribed Prednisone (steroid) and told me NOT to let my mind get the best of me and get all paranoid.  Sure enough it still is, I can't help it, haha.

Does this sound familiar to anyone's symptoms?

Thank you Dr. Sharma for your reply :)

The Urgent Care Doctor didn't quite assure me enough.  So I read some more things which brought me to Steven Johnsons Syndrome the other night freaked me out too.  Heck I even maybe thought these are facial and body warts that I'm spreading all over my body... so I went to the ER and they confirmed that it is NOT anything like SJS or warts... its a classic case of an Allergic Reaction to Penicillin.  The ER Doctor was just so much more certain of what I had...

The Urgent Care Doctor left too many doors open that it made me paranoid... and that night I started thinking do I have Herpes?  Do I have HIV?  Do I have SJS?  It just looked so horrible you think it has to be something horrible.  But I'm healing now, no more blisters are appearing... just the ones I have are going through their healing cycle... which is nasty to look at but they are hardly itch anymore.

I went to a dermatologist today to learn how to care for my skin the best way possible during this healing phase.  I'm still all blistered up and it gets worse looking as you heal that blisters get bigger in order to heal... but then it should get alot better after that she said.  Hopefully within the next few days to a weak.  And she gave me a special lotion to help the healing.

I'm still gonna be locked up in the house for the next few days letting these things heal, there is no way one wants to be seen in public like this.  I have some serious cabin fever but I'm thankful it wasn't SJS or something more dangerous.  I mean I just would have never imagined what one wrong pill can do to your body.  I mean I was so blistered up it looked like I had been lost in the Arab desert with no clothes and burned by the 150 degree temperature sun for a week straight.  And how God awful it is for those that get Steven Johnsons Syndrome.  Its like they are sick, they go get medical attention for help, they take a doctor prescribed pill and end with a horrific and rare disease.  My heart goes out to them... really my heart goes out to anyone suffering with health issues.

Thank you and thank you for hearing my rants and fears.  But I think I'm gonna be ok, just have to be patient and hopefully the next few days will get better :)  But just seeing your body turn into that in a 24 hour period was so SCARY to see.

Happy New Year :)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello dear and welcome to the medhelp forum. You have most probably suffered from an acute allergic reaction to the consumption of the penicillin antibiotic. Your doctor is right in saying that you need not become paranoid about it. My only concern is that your physician should rule out steven johnsons syndrome which is due to an immune system disorder mostly secondary to drugs like penicillin and sulphonamides. Clinical features are fever, sore throat, skin and mucosal lesions. Therapy is mostly supportive. I hope this helps. Wish you a speedy recovery.
