Is potassium effective in the treatment of myasthenia gravis?

I was in the hospital last weekend for a MG flare up. My body was paralyzed so they had to give me an infusion to end the flare up. I was admitted for the stomach flu. I had chipmunk cheeks as my skin was very puffy due to all the sodium I was given. I was also put on prednisone to help with my energy level. I am off of it now. I have found potassium to be helpful. Can potassium get the myasthenia gravis into remission? I am also hyperthyroid.

Your kidneys/adrenals would automatically just adjust the level of potassium to normal, and pass all the abnormal levels out, provided your kidneys function ok.

Usually the chipmunk cheeks are due to the steroids - the moon face of Cushing's. Steroids may impact your sodium and potassium levels, hence why they would have to give you some.

I have MG, I was given IVIG, had aseptic meningitis from it and had to get everything replaced as I got pancytopenic.

Hello,

Thank you for your question. I am not sure that potassium adds any values in treatment. The myasthenia gravis treatments are medications such as pyridostigmine, steroids and immunosuppressant agents plus removal of the thymus gland with cleaning the plasma in the blood. Please consult your neurologist for appropriate treatment details after assessment.

Hope this helps.
