Large whit spots on top of brain

My daughter has suffered many years with very bad migraine, however a few weeks ago something changed and the headaches became unbearable, she felt like small explosions were going off in her head. The doctor referred her to a neurologist after a MRI showed up lots of white spots on her brain. The Neurologist explained the many smaller white spots are typically found in migraine sufferers, however, she also has two large white areas ( about the size of golf balls) on the top of the brain, one either side of the hemispheres. The neuro took the results to other specialists but the are mystified as to what it can be. They are now going to carry out a scan with an injection of diacontrast. What could this possibly be? I am out of my mind with worry, she is only 37 with 3 young children!

I am sorry to hear about this--however there is a silver lining in every cloud--once a diagnosis is made treatment is possible. Many patients with multiple sclerosis lead a near normal life on medication. Be strong for her! Good luck!

Just to update you, Sadly my daughter has been diagnosed with MS. I'm devastated.

Thank you for your response. My daughter is awaiting a diacontrast scan so the consultant can get a better assessment.  Consultants from Bath and Bristol UK hospitals have looked at the MRI scan are at a loss as to what it can be.  The hospital will be scanning her brain and spine this time.  Her symptoms are leg and muscle weakness before the headache and then vomiting which brings no relief to the headache which goes on for hours.  Even when the headache subsides she suffers fro a heaviness/foggy feeling in her head. She is a very poorly girl. I will post the outcome if when we get a diagnosis. Thanks again for responding.

I am sorry to hear about your daughter’s medical problems.  It is difficult to comment on the exact nature of the hyper-intensities or white regions. However, the three important causes are dilatation of perivascular spaces, demyelination and reduced blood supply. Hence, these can be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol or by multiple sclerosis. Since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net please consult your doctor regarding this. Hope this helps. Take care!
