My body, or head?, slightly humming

Not sure if this is the best area to pose this scenario.  Sometimes, mostly when lying in bed before sleep, I feel like there is a slight hum in my head.  The only reason I ever noticed it is because I heard, or felt it, stop.  That is actually the weird part, it feels really weird when it stops, it is way too quiet and still and I get panicky.  I am not certain if it is just in the head or happening in the whole body.  I sort of hear it as much as feel it.  Maybe it has been there all my life and it is just freaky when it stops, when it stops it is an uncomfortable feeling.  Weird.

Hi,

I get that too.  Suddenly everything will go very quiet and I won't have realised that I had any noise in my head until it stops.  Then it seems very silent. Although different to you, I find it extremely peaceful when the noise goes.

Also I get bouts of tinnitis in 1 or both ears and this is NOT tinnitis that I'm talking about.

I think it's just a normal phenomena.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there. You could be actually experiencing tinnitus or ringing sensations in the ear. one common cause is damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Loud noise exposure, medicines like aspirin, meneire’s disease, rarely due to serious problems like aneurysm and a brain tumor. Consult an otolaryngologist to check your ears,  neurologist to do a detailed neurological examination including, motor, sensory systems, reflexes and the cranial nerves.  Psychological cause needs exclusion. Management would be according to the cause.

Do you have a headache during this time, or neck pain?  Chiari patients have a humming in their ears that is also noted as a "swishing sound".  It comes and goes, and when it stops you do feel strange that you are now in silence.  I have found that ear plugs are my best friend.so I don't have to deal with the on and off issue.  I sleep in them, read in them, design jewelry in them -- My husband finds them useful because I am quieter with them in...I actually wear them when I am dealing with a very quiet situation.  Helps me focus better too.
