TawYou,
As someone who has twice experienced cervical disk surgery at C6/C7, I recommend you try all other forms of treatment prior to surgery. Surgery is final, the other treatments can work without invading your body. Physical therapy, steriod and pain medication injections, tens units, massage, accupuncture, etc. I didn't have pain prior to the surgeries. Now, I have terrible chronic pain - plus a limited range of motion in the neck.
Here is what I have found about doctors - an osteopath will try manipulation, pain doctors will try many methods of pain control and then pain meds, your family doc will have some ideas that can help, a surgeon only thinks about surgery - whether he's an orthopod or neurosurgeon. Try everything else first. You can always have the surgery later. Once you have the surgery, it can't be undone.
Best of luck!
Curt
