chiari 1 malformation

I was just recentlly diagnosed with chiari 5-08.  I am going to need to find a good neurosurgeon.  How do I go about doing this?  I went to a neurologist that found out about my chiari by MRI of my brain, but not sure if she knew much about it.  I have symptoms of tingling, headaches, dizziness, heaviness in arms and legs and some forgetfulness.  She told me she did not think this is the cause of my symptoms.  I have been reading up on chiari malformation.  Everything that I found on it was most of these symptoms I am having.  She recently did an EEG and another MRI of my spine.  I guess I need some advise.

Thanks,

Chrispoo

Don't let her discount all your symptoms, and don't you either, or you"ll end up worse off than you are now. My doctors did the same thing too, you have to get tough and demand treatment, not necessarily surgery, but if you wait or let them kick you around from doc to doc, or completely discount your symptoms it will only hurt you not them. Did she sit down with you and explain your mri's and all your other tests? Did she recommend treatment? If she soes not give you answers get another opinion.you should get more opinions anyway. What did she say was wrong with you? How far are your cerebral tonsils hanging down? Was there any blockage of your spinal fluid at the time you had your mri's? call your insurance company and ask who they would recommend, if possible ask them to get you an appointment with neurosurgeon, etc.Hope that helps I feel for you I have gone through the same thing, Have you had any drop attacks? severe headaches or problems with neck and upper nape of the neck or even going down into the arms?A lot of doctors will say that many of your symptoms are not related to chiari, but yet so many of them are really unaware of the gravity of this condition and aren't willing to go out of their way anymore to do a little more research to understand their really are a lot more symptoms than they know. Goodluck to you, if you can't be an adversary for yourself and your cause, get someone who can be this for you, be strong, even though you feel weak. best wishes and many prayers.

sounds like my chiari symptoms, they are from your chiari and they will get worse if you don't get te surgery. The longer you wait the more the symptoms your going to have and the increased chance they will not go away. She needs to refer you to a neurosurgeon. If the first Dr. can't do it he will refer you and you have to play that game with your provider then they'll send you to someone else or you can look for one but you have to look for one with your insurance company.
