one sided head pain

Approx. 2 months ago I had a sore throat then 2 days later I started to have this excrucuiating pain in my left ear and left back side of my head almost like a stabbing pain. My head also became sore to the touch. I went to my Dr who had stated that I was the 12th patient she had seen with this and that she thinks it may be a virus. She put me on anti inflamatory and pain meds and it subsided for the most part with an occasional twinge every now n then. Now its back. please any suggestions P.S. it seamed that heat applied to the area gave me less jolts of pain. I suffer from migraines and this is def. not related. Thanks

This may be a virus that resides in the C2 dorsal ganglion and normally remains dormant, but when it flares up (during a cold or during very stressful periods) causes sharp pains in the back of your head together with so-called "referred" pain in your ear or eye.  That's how my occipital neuralgia started out many years ago, before it finally turned chronic - and later became constant and severe.  A good pain clinic is a good place to turn for help if the pain starts ruining your life.
