removal of my rods

I'm 46,broke my back in 2004 and had to have a fusion with rods at T3-T11 levels,I can't stand the rods,my back throbs and with every movement I feel them moving againt my muscles, not a good feeling.I can't run, swim and even walking *****.About 5 years ago I asked to get them out(he said no that there would be to many risks involved) and even went to get a second opinion and another no answer.I've now gone to a neuoro surgent that is now going to fuse L2-L5(this is a seperate issue with my back...severe spinal stenosis)And I asked him about taking the rods out at the thorastic level,he didn't say no.Has anybody out there have had them taken out and feel better? Thanks

Ive had 2 L5-S1 surgeries n past. I started 3 months ago with right lower back, but & leg pain also severe numbness n foot. Neuro dr.  Kept saying it was scar tissue. Finally got mri. L4-5 mild disk bulge with a more focal right foraminal compontent. Moderate right neural foraminal stenosis.  L5-S1 large right paracentral extrusion measuring 14mm AP. This effaces the right S1 nerve root. Please tell me what this means. I go 2 quack dr. Next week. Thank u so

Hi there!

The rods/ plates are inserted with a fusion to provide support and help stabilize the fusion. These may be removed at a later date if the hardware is associated with specific symptoms and the fusion is stable. In most cases this leads to improvement in the symptoms. In the earlier situation the fusion may not have been stable for the hardware removal to be considered safe.
Hope the information is helpful.

Take care!
