Most commonly, sudden onset vertigo is due to an infection, bacterial or viral, in the vestibular organs, which regulate the sense of "being level".  The best thing to do is to see a physician for an in-person diagnosis and evaluation.

I suggest a form of vertigo called BPPV. Two reference sites, www.mayoclinic.com and wikipedia, are helpful.  (Benign Proxysmal Positional Vertigo) Causes of BPPV as relayed by my PhD are anxiety disorder, brain trauma, medications and unknown.
