Are Probiotics really helpful for IBS?

After every test under the sun, my gastrointerologist says I must have IBS. I was given a prescription to try for my chronic diaharrea. I already take several other prescriptions every day for problems from MCTD (Mixed Connective Tissue Disease). Though I am generally a fan of modern medicine, I am not too keen on adding more medicines. She also suggested probiotics, specifically Flora Q. She said it helps a lot of people, but insurance doesn't pay for it. It would cost me about $1 per day. Before I spend that kind of money, I just want to know if anyone has tried it, and what you experienced.
Please do not leave me an advertisement for where to buy it. I have seen too many companies using this website to get themselves a little free advertising, while taking advantage of the vulnerability of ill people.

Probiotics have been shown in randomized placebo controled doubled blinded studies (these are the gold standard of studies) to improve IBS.  The most research probiotic is sold under a brand name of cullturelle.   it is made by conagra and has really helped me,

Correction of wrong information:

IBS is not an inflammatory disorder. It is an autonomic dysfunction.

I find probiotics very helpful for my IBS. What it does is it helps develop a healthy intestinal flora. I take it everyday. It helps you whether you have diharreah or constipation, it means that you are "off balance" ,so to speak. My 6 year old daughter takes it as well, everyday. It also helps increase your immune system. We use the "Sisu" brand acidophilus chewables..they taste really good. Go on ask.com and search the benifits of acidophilus.
Good luck, and start taking them today!

I don't know.  Try it and see how it works for you.  If it doesn't, then try a supplement or go to the prescription.

Do you think a cup or so of yogurt a day would be as effective? I like plain yogurt, and wouldn't mind eating it for breakfast every day if it would help. I know it would cost about 1/2 as much.

IBS is an inflammation of the intestines.  When the intestines get "hot" from inflammation, good bacteria is killed off along with the bad ones.  Unfortuneately that leaves the intestines without protection and IBS can get worse because of it.  Probiotics goes a long way to putting the good bacteria back into the intestines. If you don't want to take the meds, you can try eating any of the yogurts on the market, or make your own.  There are also probiotics available at health food stores.
