light headed and migraines

I was diagonosed with Migraines in January. I have had several stokes and by-pass surgery. About 9 months ago I started getting very light headed--one day losing the strength in my right leg and then the migraine started. I feared it was another stroke but my Dr. said no. If I sit for a while and then get up (slowly) and walk about 10 feet the light headed feeling starts. Usually I'll feel a tingly in my feet and it works right up the entire body with sort of a warm feeling. I get NO pain but I do need to stop and support myself. Sometimes I feel nauseated and like I'm very hungry. I call them My bad ones. Other times I just feel light headed and need to stop for awhile. Some days I'll have 15 or more of these spells and I'll feel sick and quite tired. Other days I'll have a couple and will feel no after effects. I have had MANY tests to be sure this is not associated with artery blockages. I just had an angiogram done to check the carotad arteries and the Dr. said there was nothing that would attribute to these problems. I have read the migraine symptoms and dizziness is a symptom but the room dosen't spin for me. My eyes get a wierd sensation but no spinning. The light-headed feeling has been every day since August of 2004. I have not had a severe headache since January. I have had a few episodes of flashing lights and also a few times I've seen a yellow color that has outlined my fingers when I looked down at my hands. Does this all sound like migraine symptoms? I am concerned because of the past strokes. Thank You...

Hi Janet,
My name is Kelly and I am 29 years old, I get the same symptoms as you described and I also get spinning of the room, like vertigo. I generally only get that at night around mid night or 1am, I wake and the room is spinning, I feel nauseated and sometimes get up and vomit. My doctor prescribed me with stemetil which assists with getting rid of the spinning or lightheaded feeling and also stops the nausous feeling, I generally take one of these if I wake up at night feeling ill and go back to sleep, by the morning I am generally better. I have had two children who are both under 4 and since having them my headaches are worse and more frequent, after having my second baby who is now 10 months, I had to go on Sandomigran which is a preventative that you take every night, this treatment was very effective in preventing all of my symptoms, for the first time in 5 years I was headache and migraine free everyday, I have since come of this as it was making me hold fluid retention and I put on about 5kg, since coming off it a month ago now, the symptoms are returning, I feel light headed and headachy almost every day and at times I get the full blown migraine which demands I go to bed and sleep, when I wake up in the morning, I often feel like I have a hang over, and I dont even drink!!! There is another medication I am considering whether to try, it is also a preventative, but you take it at the first sign of the migraine and you can still get on with your daily activities, which I need having a young family to take care off. It is called inigran I think.. I went to so many doctors after suffering from different symptoms as a child with migraines, I wasnt sure what my symptoms were, I had blood tests for everything and not one doctor got it right, I ended up researching on the net and diagnosed myself - then went to my doctor and said, I think this is migraines,,, DER!! So I got it right, a migraine preventative took away ALL my symptoms, so obviously thats what it is.. I also find that zyrtec hayfever treatment also helps to relieve my symptoms and try omega 3 as well.. But check with your doctor first. I hope my babble helps...

Regards - Kelly.H. Australia :)

I am having similar symptoms.  The "grid" of flashing lights appears more frequently.  Now and then I feel light headed - not dizzy - but enough that I feel I might faint.  This goes away in a matter of minutes.  I do not have headaches, although this is probably classified as a migraine.

Your symptoms are so similar, I would really appreciate your letting me know what you find out.  I am 67 yrs old, but extremely physically active (I still do kick-boxing, cardio work-outs, etc.)  No health problems.

Thanks-
c
