How do I stop scab picking?

I've been constantly picking scabs & sores on my head since the age of 13. It started after using a cheap brand of shampoo which caused irritation to my scalp. I then scratched my scalp raw which caused a lot of scabs to form. And ever since I just haven't stopped picking them.

I pretty much pick them every day. But I don't think it's down to just stress, I do it when bored or restless as well. Sometimes I barely even notice I do it. My family know but it's too embarrassing to discuss this with friends or partners. After looking online a lot of posts say it could be down to depression, but I'm pretty sure in my case it's not, as I am extremely happy with my life currently.

Going to the doctors or going on medication is a big no no for me. I don't think either thing will help. I don't want to see a councillor and I don't want meds.

I have stopped picking before and it's lasted for a few days, but then I forget or accidentally pick at my head without realising and the whole damn cycle starts again.

Does anyone have any advice or tips for stopping this? It would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.

It has become a habit and the good news is that habits can be broken.  Do you pick in public or do you have that measure of control over it?  If so and you only pick at home, then as stupid as this sounds, I would put socks on my hands or a hat on my head because you can't pick something that you cannot get to.  There was one poster that said she used to sit on her hands.

Your options are limited if you are ruling out doctors.

I didn't have the problem of picking but i did have problems with scabs on my scalp and around my ears nothing helped  but one day while taking a shower i started putting ( spell check didn't help me here) neosporen on my scalp, rubbed it in, let it sit for a few minutes then washed it out with shampoo. In 3 days my scalp was clear. no itching, no scabs. It was unbelievable how well it worked. I hope if you try it helps you too.
