Symptoms...

What are some symptoms of OCD? I've got a few mental illnesses in my family, bipolar disorder being one of them, and as I've gotten older I've looked at how I act and wonder if I don't have some of them...

It definitely sounds as if it is not a problem for you so organize away when you get the time!

Glad you agree! It bugs me that parents with sick kids take them out to begin with when they should be at home resting, and the fact that they take them to places where otherwise healthy children are running around catching all their germs...it makes me so mad! I know parents do pox parties so their kids will catch it and be done with it, BUT there's no need to take your snot nosed, coughing, sneezing kid out in public unless necessary knowing you're exposing so many others. My daughter is only almost 9 months old, I don't like either of my kids being sick, but it's so much worse since she's so little.

I'm far from trying to seek professional help, it's more of an annoyance to me than an "I need help". I was mostly just curious if it was OCD tendencies or just me being a weirdo, lol. Most of the time when something does get messed up I do fix it, but with two kids, they're usually more messed up than fixed. I'm starting to go away from the labels stuff, right now my pantry is so disorganized from my husband and son putting things away and taking them out, that I really would like to reorganize it...but there's so much more to be done around the house, dishes, laundry, and other cleaning, I just don't have the time to sit down and organize...ALTHOUGH, I did just go through my whole baby food section of my pantry and rearranged it all, but because I just bought more and had to arrange it by the date in which it expired so I'm using the "older" stuff first.

It sounds to me like you are exhibiting some OCD behaviors.  You perform rituals and you like things to be in a certain order.  The thing about OCD is it is not a problem unless it is impacting your life adversely in some way.  If the kids mess up your order, does that make you feel like you have to immediately go and fix it?  What if you just toss the box in the pantry, how would that make you feel?

In the end we all live with some quirks...if it is not impinging on your life and your family's lives, then it appears as if it is something you can live with.  If on the other hand you feel it is becoming a burden, then that is the time to seek professional help.

And I agree, sick kids should be kept home.  :)

Actually, germs are NOT something I worry about too often, I keep my kids away from situations where they may come in contact with germs, like hospitals/clinics, but I don't obsess about it. My status was because I took my son and daughter to a place called Monkey Joe's which is full of the blow up slides/bouncers, and three of the four times I've taken them there we've gotten a cold. My status was more because I get irritated that parents don't leave their sick kids at home in bed, instead they take them out to places full of other children.

The OCD part is because I do "weird things" :

When I eat candy, specifically M&Ms or Skittles, I always put an even number in my mouth (for example four), and put two on each side to chew, I'll touch one side of my body and do it on the other side, because it bugs me not to, I have all of my cans and jars in my kitchen pantry facing with labels out, cereal boxes with the nutrition info facing out, I like things standing on the bathroom counter from the tallest object to the shortest one, cascading down if they're in the corner, I can't stand the radio/tv volume to be an odd number, when I write things, if I don't like the way a letter or word looks I'll erase it (usually only if I have a pencil since pen is permanent) and rewrite it until I like it...i've always just said I'm weird, lol.

Hello.....If you want to know a lot more about OCD, you can click the link above.  But basically OCD is characterized by obsessive thoughts or actions that become intrusive to the point that it becomes a burden in our lives.  I did see that you mentioned germs in your mood section.  Is this something you worry about on a frequent basis?

In any event, OCD is very treatable and really does require professional help in most cases.  There are cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) that can be learned and there are also very good effective medications available.

If you think this is a problem in your life, you can start with a good psychologist, preferably one that specializes in CBT, so that you can get a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Good luck!
