Severe ankle sprain(Possible torn tendons etc)

Two days, Friday the 13th... I rolled my ankle on another players foot playing basketball and severely injured my ankle.  When the injury occurred, my foot rolled in and under my body and I heard and felt a 2 or 3 cracks and pops on the outside part of my ankle. Severe swelling and bruising began late last night just above my ankle and on my ankle down my foot. I do have pictures I've taken but don't know how to post them here. Is my only option to go to an orthopedic? What are my chances that I may have to have surgery?  From looking at the pictures(which I can send or post, any manner possible) what specifically looks torn/strained?

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can offer advice.

This truly sounds like it is most likely an ankle sprain, which involves stretching or tearing the ligaments on the outside of the ankle, known as the lateral ligament complex. There are three ligaments, and depending on the number of ligaents involved and the severity of the tears, sprains are graded 1 -3.
Treatment of Ankle sprains very rarely involves surgery.  However, proper treatment, including functional bracing and occasionally PT, is essential to avoid chronic instability.  In addition, I would recommend an X-ray to be sure there are no fractures. In the meantime, remember RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

*(Clarification) Swelling occurred immediately after the injury but the bruising began late last night.
