Calf Pain

Again another soccer injury....for the past two years I have suffered of calf pain in both cross-country and soccer. The pain is on both calves and when I run, they feel very tight making it difficult to run. I asked the trainer what I could do and all she said was to stretch. Even though I stretch the calves for a significant amount of time and massage them with icy hot, the pain continues. What can I do to better this problem?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello!

In calf muscle pain there can be involvement of gastrocnemius muscle or soleus muscle due to your schedule of cross country and soccer in a continuous way.

I would suggest you to rule out any deep calf pain due to involvement of veins or any peripheral artery disease which can be ruled out by an examination and also Doppler ultra sound.

I would suggest you to get your calf examined by an orthopedician to diagnose the reason to be local muscle involvement or any pain connected with your hip and knee due to some problem in your lower back.

Rule out tendoachilles pain and start physiotherapy and stretching exercises with the help of a physiotherapist.

Wear proper footwear and take intermittent NSAIDs. Tell your mom to use ice packs.

Take care!
