Can pins put in a wrist fracture cause a large open wound

My 7 year old granddaughter broke her wrist, went to the ER and they reduced it and put on an over the elbow cast. After an x-ray two weeks later the bone had moved so the doctor said she needed pins inserted to keep the bone stable. 3 weeks later they took off the cast and there was a very large open wound where the pins were. He said this could happen in a certain percentage of patients. Has this happened to anyone or does anyone know anything about this?
