Can staples be put over stitches

I got knee arthroscopy surgery for a loose body removal. a week later I still had liquid discharge from the incision,so the doctor wrapped it with an ace bandage, went back a few days later and still had the discharge so my doctor decided to put 3 staples over the stitches to try to stop the fluid from coming out.can this be done and was he supposed to do this?

Hello and welcome to MedHelp's forums.  Thank you for your question.  The knee is a notoriously difficult place to heal.  We bend it so often that stitches OR staples constantly get stretched. Your surgeon seems concerned that the staples are not adequately sealing the wound so reinforced.  Follow up with them regarding your concerns but this is occasionally done. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/17153-knee-arthroscopy
