IM Rod pround screw in lower left femur, intense pain.

I had an Intramedullary rod installed in my left femur on 20/06/2016. the screw in my lower left femur sticks out one the outer left knee about half an inch and will lock my IT band and cause extreme pain in my lower knee just left of the patella. Is it normal for the screw to stick out about half an inch and if not can the surgeon put in a smaller screw?
