Materials to pierce a femur bone

I am working on a project related to measuring the natural angle during a total or partial knee replacement surgery. I'm designing a device to measure the required angle, but I'm not sure about a specific point- can a stainless steel ( or titanium) needle pierce the femur bone? on what grounds can I decide for a material's piercing ability? any kind of information regarding this topic will be of great help. Thankyou in advance.
