Popping sensation around the knee

Im a 23 year old regular gym goer
about a month ago i took a couple weeks of gym for no particular reason (needed abit of a rest)
during this time i was doing alot of incline cardio (nothing too strenuous)
sometime during i developed a weird problem around my knee region.

Below my right knee towards the right, sort of between the tibia and fibular, NOT the knee however, i get a popping sensation under certain circumstances.

if ive been sitting down for alittle while and i stand up, lean on the right (moving my knee laterally too) and straighten it back up i feel a pop in this region.
if i twist my leg right there is the same pop.
the pop feels like a 'catch' - it is painless. it only causes discomfort.

im back in the gym now and after warming up this sensation completely goes then returns after my workout.

my range of motion of my knee is not affected.
i have done an ultrasound and MRI on my knee (GP recommended)
US showed fluid around the suprapatellar region which subsided a couple weeks ago.
MRI showed no abnormalities that would warrant my sensation.

however my GP seems convinced its my knee when the sensation does not originate anywhere near my knee(as stated above).

only thing i can come up with is a tight / inflamed IT band.

can anyone give me any advice on what i should do, my next step is to see a orthopedic but i dont have insurance so its kind of hard at the moment.

should also add sensation does not occur if my leg is bent.
the pop only appears when my leg is straight or locked.
