Quadricep Strain/Tear?

During soccer practice, it was very chilly and I was doing a drill that required me to accelerate quickly.  While running, I had this sharp almost ripping sensation in my right thigh and basically fell because i couldn't run on it anymore.  I have been icing it and resting it when possible, but it is still swollen and I'm in pain.  I couldn't bend my leg for a while, but now it has become easier to walk.  Another concern is that it is nearly impossible for my to flex my quad.  Should I seek medical advice? Or just wait for the pain to go away and continue R.I.C.E.?

RICE only applies to acute injuries within 24-48hrs. the best advice is after your doctor's appointment, seek physical therapy consult and they can provide you with neuromuscular stimulation coupled with stretching and strengthening of your quads.  good luck..

Thank you both very much.  I've made an appointment to have it checked out. It's been a little over a week but still keeps me awake at night and I can't walk normally.  Thank you for the advice!

Hi,
Hope your pain is settling down.
It would be better if you can meet your physician to have it sorted out, as RICE protocol is not much helpful as posted by you.
Until then you can try muscle relaxants like Tab. Myospaz forte which can help you out.

Hi.

How long was it since you suffered that injury? A sprain or muscle strain would normally show signs of improvement in at least a week. However, your symptom of being unable to flex your quadriceps, if for more than a week, should be reason enough to have it checked by a physician. In the meantime, continue with the RICE protocol.

Hope this helps.
