TORN ANKLE LIGAMENTS, HOW LONG UNTIL BETTER?

I hurt my right ankle in August 2010, shoe stuck between two pavers and couldn't move, so ankle was the joint that had to give. Huge swelling immediately (size of tennis ball swelling on the outside of ankle joint), loud popping sound, thought I'd dislocasted my ankle or something. X-Ray shows ANTERIOR TALOFIBULAR LIGAMENT tear. Had physio for 9 weeks, ankle had no support during this time on physio advice. Saw Dr, as ankle not getting any better. Told to stop physio and wear ankle brace.

Still a lot of pain in ankle joint, if I walk or drive today, can hardly weaight bear on the ankle the next day. Ankle still swollen in two places, one on outside of ankle joint, second swelling  inside top of ankle joint. Swelling not as bad as initially however still significant compared to other ankle.

When should I start to see decent improvement and be able to walk normal distance etc? Thank you!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello!

You have to first take rest and follow immobilization of your ankle joint for 4 weeks in ankle brace or crepe bandage. Physiotherapy should be started after healing of the ligament tear. Physiotherapy is done to reduce stiffness and to strengthen the ligament.

Take pain killers such as ibuprofen or naproxen and apply ice packs to reduce pain and inflammation.

Follow up with an orthopedician and go for present day scans to check healing.

Take care!

Oh God I feel for you!

No support for 9 weeks...yikes. I'm so surprised you were not given a long boot to wear to keep everything in place while it heals.

This happened last August?  You need to get to an Ortho asap. (Is the dr you mention an Ortho?)

I fell a month ago and heard/felt a crack in my ankle, Ortho said a fracture at first then now said it's a severe sprain and I'm in agony and can hardly move it, can't walk without the walking boot and then it's still SO painful. I have crutches and had to use them for 3 weeks.

Ask your Dr for a referral to an Ortho, you should already have been seeing one, good luck!

I broke both bones in my ankle and tore ligament completely....I had no pain in the ankle was ok...I could walk on it ok.....but my hip on the other leg..pops and feels out of place..have to get something for inside my shoes....I had infection in the ankle....may need another surgery to clean it out...but I am on antibiotics for the rest of my life....I am so worried and concerned that I will get a bad infection and half to lose my foot....it has not hurt in 15 months..but today out of nowhere..I can't put any pressure on it...very painful and swollen..it just came out of nowhere.I hope it goes away...this happened just one other time a year after my surgery...but that time I fell..this time..I did nothing wrong...help......D,Cirino
