Tibia Plateau Stress Fracture

Hi,  I have tibia stress fracture(result of jogging and exercises) in both my knees. Its been almost 4 weeks that I guess I had this incident. Initially I had pain only when I was jogging, other than that I was able to walk quite normally with out any pain, so I ignored and did not consult any doctor but 2 weeks approx. after the incident I experienced extreme pain while walking for about a week, (then I have consulted a doctor) after which the pain was gone. And now (from past 15 days) I do not experience any pain.
Though the initial x-rays did not confirm any fractures but MRIs has revealed fractures in both the knees. The doctor has advised 6 weeks of total rest. I have been given a wheel chair and right now I am not walking at all.I have read in the literature that one can walk and do daily routines normally even though he has tibia stress fractures. What I do not understand is my doctor has advised not to walk at all. I think I still have to take 4 weeks of complete rest(according to the doctor) Could any body please advise me on what should I do?I mean is it safe to walk and do normal routines?

Thanks a lot.
Abhi.

Hello Dr. Kokil Mathur,

Thank you very much for the advice, definitely I appreciate your  help. The only reason I asked was because I read online that stress fractures are not really fractures and one can definitely walk around with out doing fitness like jogging and running.I am not so keen on doing all these fitness stuff but I just wanted to walk because I have to work.

By the way I had complete bed rest for 6  weeks and my new MRI shows that my leg is showing some progress and is definitely better than before. So my doctor has advised I can walk now with the help of crutches and it will be fine in another 4weeks. And he also mentioned its just a precaution so that the fracture doesn't get  worsened.

Thank you very much.
Abhi

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL

Hi Abhi!
Well, if it was a hairline stress fracture of your little toe or metatarsal, then yes, you could have moved about in a CAM boot or boot plaster. However, tibia is a weight bearing bone. If you walk when you have stress fracture, the pain will increase. The healing will be delayed. At times, this minor fracture can become full fracture and compound problems. So, please follow your doctor’s instructions. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.
