To sling or not to sling?

Currently in a short arm cast for a torn tfcc. (Reoccuring injury). I know that the less stress and swelling on the joint the better. I am at day 7 and any use at all does irritate and cause joint to swell. Can always get swelling down. Asked about sling and the PA view was 'not necessary, but if it makes it feel better use it.

Am I an idiot thinking that if the sling helps prevent movement that I should do it full time till that swelling with use stops? With exception of some elbow rom exercises.  Or is a sling just for a sac overkill?

I like your user name.  I should probably change mine to cranky mom.  LOL  It would be very fitting!  Go with the sling if it helps.  Doesn't sound like it will hurt anything and nothing that makes you feel better is overkill.  That's my opinion.  Besides, maybe the kids will do more for you if you have the sling on . . . let me know as I might put one on just for that reason if it works.  (sorry, I'm slap happy).  But really, this can't hurt and resting something makes sense.  Do you take ibuprofen for the swelling?  I used to not want to take it.  And finally a physical therapist was like---  knock it off.  Get rid of your swelling as often as possible so you can properly heal.  So, I took it and it helped.  That's kind of a no brainer.  But just thought I'd mention it. It's been a couple of days since you posted this--- did you go with the sling?

I just did it during the day. I get to work from home do no big deal.  Four  weeks later had an apt. Was still having pain and they found some separation between scaphoid and lunate which means slight tear there. Did another cast but higher on thumb  so no movement there at all. Previously could move top joint.. Five weeks down one to go till I hope just pt and bracing.  Think is more annoying now as I can use it more than week one
