What could cause a sudden pain at site of a metal plate?

I have had a metal plate in my lower leg for 18 years now. The surgical area has become red, feverish, and painful both to tuch and to walk on. mild swelling. No recent injuries that I can account for this flare up, and have had great success with this up to now.

Any ideas of what could be the cause of this, and how long it could last?

Metal work can break or they can become infected. I would go see your doc and get an x-ray and a set of bloods done to see for infection markers.

I agree with sillymistakes87. You need to get this checked asap. Plates can become infected and/or move!  Please let us know what the doctor says and sorry you are going through this.
