What to do about a cut to an index finger with possible nerve damage?

I recently sustained a cut to my left index finger. The laceration is nearly 6 cm long, stops less than 1 mm from the bone, is nearly perpendicular to the finger, faces towards the thumb, and begins just above the palm area. I have mild numbness in and around the injury site and slight tingling towards the tip of the affected finger. I've already had the finger stitched up (8 stitches) and am awaiting a consult with an orthopedic surgeon. I'm curious to know what experiences others may have had in this area. I'm also very curious to know what course of action a competent doctor would take to to determine if there is any damage to the digital nerve and what they would recommend to repair the damage.
