What's wrong with me knee?

So recently I was involved in a car accident. After the accident my knee was swollen and I was in a lot of pain. I've already had ACl surgery years back. Long story short I did an MRI yesterday and the results came back with the following.

1 Moderate to severe thinning of the posterior femoral articular cartilage

2 There is a macerated tear of the body and the posterior horn of lateral meniscus.

The meniscus I am already aware of what that is however after hours of research I still cant tell what severe thinning of the articular cartilage means. What type of injury is that and is it serious? I have an appointment next week but I can't seem to find comfort without knowing what's wrong. If anyone can help with this I would appreciate the help. Also what is expected from this type of injury? I'm not looking for medical advice just some thoughts and opinions. Thank you

Sorry about the accident. That's a bummer.  So, your main question is about the cartilage thinning in your knee?  I found this which might help. https://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/sport-injuries/knee-pain/acute-knee-injuries/knee-articular-cartilage-injury  Your accident could have caused this or it could have been happening over time.  But either way, that is now seen, it's now a fact of your knee.  Sorry about that!  RICE is often applied to help with it. (rest, ice, compression and elevation) to reduce swelling. Doctor can give a professional ice wrap.  If doc says it's okay, you can take ibuprofen.  Some people are okay with just that.  Others may need surgery. So, like everything, this will depend on the severity of your actual state of cartilage thinning.

When are you seeing a doctor next?
