foot mystery...

4 months ago I noticed my foot was swollen. I had not fallen or anything. The next day when I got up it was very painful and I heard something pop. So I immediately went to the hospital. Where they did do an x-ray and was told that I did not have any broken bones. My foot was red and would change colors, especially when I put weight on it. I was referred to an orthopedic who then ordered a bone scan but did not find anything however he did put my foot in a cast to see if it helped with the pain and swelling. 3 weeks later my foot was still the same and the cast was taken off. He scheduled an mri and the mri showed that my 5th metatarsal was too long. He said that was probably something I was born with. He said he did not know what was wrong with my foot and sent me to see a foot and ankle specialist. They ordered an ultrasound to rule out blood clots and there were not any. Now the foot and ankle specialist does not know what is wrong with my foot. I am not able to walk much on my foot and I can not put my toes to the floor. When I do walk on it, I have to walk on the side of my foot because the pain is so bad. I do not know where to go from here. Does anyone have any suggestions???

Was the foot and ankle specialist a podiatrist or an MD? Can you find an foot and ankle surgeon at a teaching hospital?

I had foot and ankle problems for 4 plus and had all the tests (at least twice) everything was always normal. Finally I found a doctor who was willing to do surgery and found I had very lax ligaments.

Does your foot feel like it is about to give out? I recommend that you search until you find answers and do not take "it's nerve pain." That is typically a cop out for-- "I do not know."

I hope this helps,

PS If you are in or near Illinois I recommend Dr Haddad at Illinois Bone and Joint--

Hi there!

I am not sure what this could be due to. Since most major causes such as blood clots, injuries, inflammations etc have been ruled out, I would not suspect this to be something serious. You could try resting the foot for a few days and avoid weight bearing along with anti-inflammatory medications and see if this seems to help.
Hope this is helpful.
