index knuckle pain

Back in March I was holding a little girl that was standing on my lap and she lost her balance and squatted down. My hand was behind her knee and my right index finger popped and then hurt really bad for awhile. I assumed it would go away and it didn't. A few days later I went to urgent care. They took x-rays and saw nothing and told me to take ibuprofen and continue to use it like normal. Every time I bumped my hand or finger it would feel like it's on fire for a few minutes then go away. The end of May I went to a sport physician and he told me to take  ibuprofen and wrap the index and middle finger together since it is my dominant hand. I've done that but continued to hit it and go through the few minutes of pain. It's not really swollen but still hurts about 4 months later. I'm worried that one of the many times I hit it I made it worse. I can't push down on my finger/knuckle nor have an open hand and like you getting up using your hand or popping your knuckle with finger straight. Now my issue is that my work switched insurance companies and now I have crappy insurance and can't really afford to get it checked out let alone fixed. If it's something serious I will have to figure something out. Any help will be appreciated.
